Mumbai City FC saw off NorthEast United FC in Shillong on Friday to strengthen their position in the race for the playoffs and in doing so reached a milestone no other team in the Indian Super League (ISL) have achieved.

The Islanders recorded their 100th win in the league and became the fastest team to achieve the feat. Mumbai City FC are the most successful team in the league’s history with two League Shields and two ISL Cup triumphs to their name and have now entered the record books again for taking their victory count into triple digits.

From having a slow start to life in the ISL to becoming one of the most consistent sides in the league, Mumbai City FC’s journey has been full of ups and downs. Several players and head coaches have contributed to their success over the years as the club have built themselves to be a real force in Indian football.

Sergio Lobera is the most successful head coach in the club’s history having won the League and Cup double in 2020-21 but in terms of most wins, that honour falls to Des Buckingham who led the club in one of their most successful seasons in terms of victories.

Timeline of the century

A thumping victory over the neighbours (October 2014): The Islanders recorded their first-ever win in the ISL thanks to an Andre Moritz hat-trick that propelled them to a 5-0 win over FC Pune City. It was one of very few wins the club scored in the opening season but they entered the record books as Moritz became the first player to score a hat-trick in the ISL.

Sunil Chhetri marks his arrival in the ISL (October 2015): Another memorable result in the first few seasons for Mumbai City FC came against NorthEast United FC when a Sunil Chhetri hat-trick guided them to a 5-1 win over NorthEast United FC. He became the first Indian player to score a hat-trick in the ISL.

Mumbai City FC make their first-ever playoffs in style (November 2016): The Islanders qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 2016 under Alexandre Guimaraes and finished top of the table after the league stage. Led by the impeccable Diego Forlan who helped himself to a hat-trick in the 5-0 victory over the Kerala Blasters FC at home sealed the top spot for the home side.

Sougou shines as Mumbai City FC dazzle (December 2018): Modou Sougou scored four goals as Mumbai City FC brushed aside Kerala Blasters FC 6-1 in the 2018-19 season, a win that set the Islanders on their way to their second playoff qualification, this time under Jorge Costa.

Lobera era in full swing at Mumbai City FC (February 2021): Mumbai City FC dominated the ISL and in 2020-21 with possession-based football under Lobera. One of the highlights of that season was the impressive 6-1 win over Odisha FC . After falling a goal behind, the Islanders rallied thanks to a Bipin Singh hat-trick, a brace from Bartholomew Ogbeche and a goal from Cy Goddard.

Mumbai City FC clinch the League Shield (February 2021): Fresh from a big win over Odisha FC, Mumbai City FC went into the League Shield decider with Mohun Bagan SG with full confidence. Trailing the leaders by three points, Lobera’s men needed a win to leapfrog the Mariners on superior head-to-head record and they did just that with goals from Mourtada Fall and Bartholomew Ogbeche to seal their first-ever League Shield.

Bipin Singh fired Mumbai City FC to the Double (March 2021): The Islanders faced off against Mohun Bagan SG once again in the ISL Cup final just a few weeks after they had pipped them to the League Shield. David Williams fired the Mariners into the lead but Mumbai City FC bounced back thanks to a Tiri own goal before winning the final with a goal from Bipin Singh in the dying minutes to make Mumbai City FC the first and only team to date to win the League Shield and the ISL Cup double in a single season.

Buckingham’s team run riot in Chennai (November 2022): Mumbai City FC played their best and most flamboyant football under Buckingham in 2022-23 and that was in full show in Chennai when Mumbai City FC came back from a 0-2 deficit to emerge victorious by a margin of 6-2. There was no stopping the Islanders after that as they won the League Shield in record-breaking fashion.

Late Mumbai City FC comeback floors FC Goa (April 2024): Now under Kratky, Mumbai City FC had lost the League Shield to Mohun Bagan SG on the final day of the league stage and appeared to be heading for a first-leg defeat in the semi-final against FC Goa when Lalianzualla Chhangte took matters in his own hands. The Islanders headed into the 90th minute trailing the Gaurs by two goals before Chhangte halved the deficit with a cool finish under pressure. Vikram Partap Singh then levelled the score just a minute later before Chhangte popped up again in the sixth minute of stoppage time to record one of the most dramatic comebacks in ISL history. Mumbai went on to reach the ISL Cup final after a 2-0 win in the second leg.

Second-half show hands Mumbai City FC the ISL Cup (May 2024): Mumbai City FC went back to Kolkata in the ISL Cup final, a place where they had surrendered the League Shield just a month ago. A packed Salt Lake was full of Mohun Bagan Sg supporters and much to their joy the Mariners surged into a first-half lead despite being largely second-best in the game. But Mumbai City FC kept at it and wore the Mariners down with three brilliant goals in the second half to clinch a 3-1 victory and win their second ISL Cup.

The century is up (February 2025): Mumbai City FC were the first visitors as Shillong hosted an ISL game for the first-time ever as they made the occasion memorable for themselves as they saw off hosts NorthEast United FC by a margin of 2-0 to strengthen their bid for a place in the playoffs.
