Mohun Bagan Super Giant – 2 (Jamie Maclaren 90+9’, Manvir Singh 90’)

Sporting Club Delhi – 1 (Clarence Savio Fernandes 63’)

Kolkata, Thursday, May 21, 2026: On a dramatic final day of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season, Mohun Bagan Super Giant did all they could at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, edging Sporting Club Delhi 2-1 on Thursday night, only to fall agonisingly short in the title race as East Bengal FC clinched the league crown with a simultaneous 2-1 victory over Inter Kashi.

For large parts of the evening, the tension inside the Salt Lake Stadium reflected the emotional weight carried by Kolkata’s two footballing giants. Every Mohun Bagan attack was met with anticipation, every update from the East Bengal match altered the mood, and despite the Mariners securing three points through goals from Jamie Maclaren and Manvir Singh, the result ultimately proved insufficient as East Bengal sealed the title on goal difference.

Clarence Savio Fernandes scored Sporting Club Delhi’s lone goal in a contest that remained competitive throughout, with the visitors showing resilience despite Mohun Bagan controlling large spells of the game.

The victory ensured Mohun Bagan finished the campaign in second place with 26 points, level on points with the champions but separated by the narrowest of margins. Sporting Club Delhi, meanwhile, concluded their season in 11th place on the same points tally after another spirited display against one of the league’s strongest sides.

Sporting Club Delhi made the brighter start and nearly stunned the home crowd within the opening five minutes. Mohammed Aimen won a free-kick at the edge of the box after being brought down by Mehtab Singh before stepping up himself and rattling the crossbar with a dipping effort that beat the wall and had Vishal Kaith beaten.

Delhi continued to press early on, with Sourav skipping past Liston Colaco on the right and forcing Kaith into another save from a tight angle in the seventh minute.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant, however, gradually settled into the contest after a nervy opening spell and soon began asserting control with sustained pressure in the final third.

The Mariners nearly capitalised from a corner in the 15th minute when Delhi failed to clear their lines, allowing Mehtab a close-range attempt that Nora Fernandes reacted sharply to deny. Moments later, Tom Aldred went close with a glancing header that drifted narrowly wide.

Once Mohun Bagan found their rhythm, the momentum shifted decisively. Dimitrios Petratos struck the side-netting from a cleverly worked short corner in the 19th minute before Mehtab tested Fernandes again with a header from Jason Cummings’ cross three minutes later. The game briefly opened up at both ends as Joseph Sunny attempted a speculative curler for Delhi, though the visitors increasingly struggled to retain possession or create meaningful openings against Mohun Bagan’s organised defensive shape.

The home side’s attacking pressure only intensified as the half progressed. Manvir headed narrowly off target from another dangerous corner in the 37th minute before Sahal Abdul Samad curled an effort just over the bar shortly after, with Fernandes stretching at full length. Delhi’s goalkeeper was then called into action repeatedly in a frantic sequence late in the half. He first denied Cummings from close range before Jamie Maclaren failed to connect cleanly with the rebound. The loose ball fell kindly for Cummings again, but the Australian blasted over from point-blank range with the goal at his mercy.

Mohun Bagan continued to threaten deep into stoppage time when Anirudh Thapa picked out Cummings with a delicate lob inside the box, only for Fernandes to rush out and smother the danger before the forward could shoot. Delhi managed a rare late spell near the Mohun Bagan penalty area, but Aimen’s ambitious long-range effort in added time flew harmlessly off target as the hosts closed the half firmly on top after an entertaining and high-tempo opening 45 minutes.

Mohun Bagan resumed the second half with the same attacking intent that had defined the closing stages of the first. Within two minutes of the restart, Cummings drove purposefully towards the Delhi penalty area before unleashing a powerful effort from distance that Fernandes pushed away with another impressive save. Colaco was free to his left, but the Australian chose to go for goal himself.

The pressure continued to mount on Delhi soon after. Manvir came agonisingly close in the 51st minute when he rose highest from another corner and directed a powerful header onto the crossbar. The rebound sparked chaos inside the six-yard box, but none of the Mohun Bagan players could apply the decisive touch.

Despite spending long periods without the ball, Delhi remained disciplined and continued to look for openings on the counter, although Mohun Bagan’s compact defensive shape restricted the visitors from breaking forward with any real consistency.

Yet, against the run of play, it was Delhi who struck first in the 63rd minute. Abdul Halik Hudu was afforded too much space in the final third and delivered a teasing cross into the box, where Clarence produced a superb glancing header that flew beyond Kaith into the far corner. It was a goal crafted with precision and one that momentarily silenced the home crowd.

To Mohun Bagan’s credit, the setback only increased their urgency. Subhasish Bose began pushing higher from the left flank, while the hosts committed more bodies forward in search of an equaliser. Delhi, meanwhile, looked increasingly comfortable on the ball compared to the first half and nearly doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Clarence again found space inside the box, only for Kaith to produce a sharp reflex save to keep the Mariners alive in the title race.

The contest became increasingly stretched in the closing stages. Robson Robinho threatened twice for Mohun Bagan, first with an ambitious long-range strike that flashed narrowly wide before weaving past multiple defenders moments later, only for Ashutosh Mehta to make another crucial intervention. The Delhi defender delivered a tireless performance at the back and repeatedly threw himself into dangerous situations to frustrate the home side.

Mohun Bagan thought they had found the breakthrough in the 82nd minute when Maclaren poked home from Cummings’ cross, prompting huge celebrations around the stadium, but the offside flag cut them short. Still, the pressure never relented. Deep into stoppage time, Ashutosh again produced a vital goal-saving challenge on Cummings after Delhi lost possession in a dangerous area.

However, Mohun Bagan’s persistence finally paid off. In the 90th minute, Colaco delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, and Manvir arrived at the near post to head home the equaliser. Then, with the clock ticking deep into added time, the Mariners completed the turnaround as Maclaren bundled Colaco’s cross into the net in the 90+9th minute, sparking wild celebrations inside the Salt Lake Stadium.

The late comeback summed up Mohun Bagan’s fighting spirit on a night loaded with pressure and emotion. But while the Mariners produced a stirring finish against Delhi, the dramatic winner ultimately proved insufficient in the wider context of the title race as East Bengal’s victory elsewhere ensured the ISL trophy would head across the city on goal difference.
