How Steve Coppell instilled discipline and belief with his teams in the ISL
A look back at Steve Coppell’s ISL tenure, where discipline, organisation, and resilience defined his teams.

In the early years of the Indian Super League (ISL), big names from around the world were beginning to influence its direction, and few arrivals carried the quiet authority of Steve Coppell. World football already knew him as the flying winger during his playing days with Manchester United and the England national team, before he moved into coaching with stints in the Premier League and Championship.
In 2016, Coppell brought that football pedigree to India. Over the next three seasons, he became a steady hand on the touchline, instilling discipline, organisation, and a sense of English football tradition at three different clubs. His time in the ISL may not have brought silverware, but his influence continues to earn him the respect of fans.
First steps with Kerala Blasters FC
The English influence at Kerala Blasters FC was immense in their early years, and Steve Coppell became another key figure in shaping that identity. His ISL journey began in 2016, at a time when the Blasters were looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2015 season that had seen them finish at the bottom of the table. The challenge was significant, but Coppell wasted no time in instilling discipline and organisation. He built a side that thrived on defensive solidity and sharp counter-attacks, a style that suited the squad perfectly.

Under his guidance, Kerala Blasters FC mounted a remarkable turnaround. They finished second in the table and reached the ISL final for the second time. They also kept the second-most clean sheets in the process. Although heartbreak followed once again with a narrow penalty shootout defeat to ATK FC, Coppell had already won the admiration of the fans. He had transformed Kerala Blasters FC into one of the league’s most resilient and respected teams.
Building from scratch at Jamshedpur FC
If Coppell’s first assignment in India showed he could revive a struggling side, his next challenge was even more demanding. Jamshedpur FC entered the ISL in the 2017–18 season, and Coppell was handed the responsibility of building the club from the ground up. He leaned on what he knew best: organisation, discipline, and defensive stability.

Under his guidance, Jamshedpur FC became a team that was notoriously difficult to break down. They conceded the second-fewest goals in the league stage as well as the joint second-most clean sheets in the league, but a lack of firepower up front ultimately cost them a playoff spot in their debut season. Still, the grit and structure Coppell instilled gave the club an identity from day one. Even without a playoff appearance, Jamshedpur FC’s competitive edge and never-say-die spirit became their hallmark under Coppell.
Final bow with ATK FC
Coppell’s last and final ISL chapter came with ATK FC in the 2018–19 season. Taking over a team that had already established itself as one of the league’s powerhouses with two ISL Cups, Coppell attempted to blend his trademark discipline with the ambition of the Kolkata-based side. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing for Coppell's side, with inconsistency hampering their campaign, and ATK FC ultimately failed to reach the playoffs.

ATK FC ended the season in sixth place, five points shy of the playoffs. While the results on the pitch were modest, Coppell’s calm approach and professionalism earned quiet appreciation, much like his tenures at his previous two clubs.
Overall, Coppell’s time in India may not have produced silverware, but it underlined why he remained a respected figure across the league. His emphasis on defensive discipline, ability to work closely with players, nurture young talent, and inspire teams has ensured that his name is still remembered with respect in Indian football.
