East Bengal FC joined the Indian Super League (ISL) in the 2020-21 season, and since then, their journey has been a test of patience and perseverance.

The Red and Gold Brigade struggled to find their footing in the ISL as they haven’t qualified for the playoffs in each of the last five seasons. However, amid the tumultuous first few seasons, the Kolkata giants slowly but gradually improved their points tally under the guidance of head coaches like Carles Cuadrat and Oscar Bruzon.

While collective efforts may not have powered East Bengal FC to the ISL playoffs, there were a couple of foreigners who rose to the occasion, etching their names into the hearts of Red and Gold faithful. These players provided moments of brilliance and hope, proving that the right overseas talent can be a game-changer.

With that said, let's take a look at some of the club's most impactful foreign signings in the ISL.

Cleiton Silva

Cleiton Silva is one of the easiest picks in this list. The Brazilian has been one of the longest-serving foreigners for the club in the league, and his stint was nothing but a statement.

A veteran with a proven track record in the ISL, Silva maintained his goal-scoring record as he racked up 20 goals and six assists across three seasons in East Bengal FC colours.

More than just a goalscorer, he was a leader on the field, often seen orchestrating attacks and guiding his teammates. Silva also won the Kalinga Super Cup in 2023 with the Kolkata giants.

Saul Crespo

Saul Crespo joined East Bengal FC ahead of the 2023-24 season and has been a key player since joining the club. Despite injuries cutting down his game time, the midfielder has made 27 ISL appearances for the Red and Gold Brigade and recorded five goals and two assists.

The Spaniard has been instrumental in breaking up opposition attacks with timely interceptions and then, with equal measure, dictates the tempo of the game with his precise passing range. His seamless transition into the team and his ability to form a solid partnership with his Indian counterparts have been key to East Bengal FC's recent performances.

Hijazi Maher

Hijazi Maher joined East Bengal FC as a replacement for injured Jordan Elsey in 2023, and proved to be a rock at the back with clinical defensive prowess. The Jordanian defender brought much-needed stability and composure to the Red and Gold Brigade's backline with his international experience.

Maher registered 30 appearances for the Kolkata giants across two seasons, recording nine clean sheets during this time. With two goals to his name, Maher won 106 duels, completed 142 recoveries, and also maintained 79% passing accuracy.

Antonio Perosevic

Antonio Perosevic's time at East Bengal FC may have been brief, but his impact was undeniable. The Croatian forward was a whirlwind of energy and skill, providing a much-needed spark in the attack during the 2021-22 season.

His dazzling runs, mazy dribbles, and ability to create chances and individual brilliance were a rare bright spot in a challenging season for the Red and Gold Brigade. Perosevic played 14 ISL games, recorded four goals and an assist, created 22 chances and also attempted 17 successful dribbles.

Bright Enobakhare

Bright Enobakhare joined East Bengal FC during the latter half of the 2020-21 season and his impact was significant, albeit short-lived. His dribbling ability and individual skill made him a fan favourite during his brief stint.

Enobakhare scored on his debut against Odisha FC and followed it up with a spectacular solo goal against FC Goa, showcasing his individual skill and creativity. He featured in 12 games, scoring three goals and providing an assist, while completing 56 successful dribbles. East Bengal FC never lost a game in which he scored or assisted.
