Zico: We didn’t play good football

Following a 4-0 defeat in the Hero Indian Super League on Sunday evening, FC Goa coach Zico admitted his team were no match for defending champions Atlético de Kolkata at the Salt Lake Stadium. FC Goa went into the match high on confidence in the wake of their 7-0 win against Mumbai City FC earlier this week but against an inspired ATK side they fell by the wayside, as a result of which they were displaced by the hosts at the top of the table.
“In ninety minutes we just played fifteen minutes. So it’s not enough. And in football, nothing is a surprise,” Zico told reporters after the match.
When asked whether they were complacent going into the match after such a big win against Mumbai, Zico said: “Kolkata played better than us. They scored two goals in a span of less than five minutes. Our team didn’t react well after those goals. We didn’t play good football. I cannot take away the merit of the other team and find any excuse. Kolkata played better.”
For the second time this season, Goa suffered a 4-0 defeat. Last month, they were on the wrong end of a similar scoreline against Chennaiyin FC. However, despite the loss on Sunday, the Gaurs were still one of the favourites to reach the semis with 18 points from 11 matches. When asked how they were going to move on from the humbling experience in Kolkata, Zico said: “So it’s the second time this happened. We lost 4-0 to Chennai but we overcame that situation and we are in a good position in the table. We have three more games…This game does not change anything. We just have to see what our mistakes were this time and try to correct it in the next game.”
