Zico: I won’t consider it a loss

FC Goa head coach Zico is affected not in the least following his team’s 1-0 defeat by Delhi Dynamos FC in the first leg of their Hero Indian Super League Season 2 semi-final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Friday.

The Gaurs loss the match against Delhi for the first time ever after Robin Singh scored the lone goal of the match through a header in the first half. Delhi will now head to Goa for the return leg on December 15 and Zico was confident that his team will be able to get the better of Roberto Carlos’ men at Fatorda.

“I won’t consider it a loss because it’s a game of 180 minutes. We have 90 more minutes. Of course, Delhi can now play for the other result – a draw. Delhi is very strong at home. We were the first to beat them here this season [in the last team of the league stage]. We are going to prepare ourselves and try to reverse this. We had opportunities to come back in this game but it is only a one-goal deficit and I am confident we can come back,” Zico told reporters after the game.

“I am never happy with a loss. But this is just the first half of the game. It’s like we are going into the second half and Delhi has a one-goal lead.”

Delhi forward Gustavo dos Santos had a great day at the office and bothered the Gaurs defenders all through the match, especially Narayan Das. However, Zico defended his players at the back. “They are very young. They will learn. Of course, he didn’t challenge hard and they were complaining with the referee. But they’re young and I’ll tell them that you have to learn and do your best,” the Brazilian said.

Zico also confirmed that Raju Gaikwad and Reinaldo were injury concerns ahead of the second leg. However, he was confident that Rafael Coelho, who replaced Reinaldo on Saturday, could start in Fatorda. “Physically, he’s fit and was prepared even today to play the 90 minutes. But we have to see and check whether he can play the 90 minutes in the second leg,” Zico said.
