Jose Molina, the head coach of Mohun Bagan Super Giant, reflects on his journey, his past experiences, and his vision for the future.

Molina took over from Antonio Lopez Habas, who guided the team to their first Indian Super League (ISL) Shield, assuming the head coach role in June. The 54-year-old emphasized that his commitment to the Mariners is fueled by a desire for success, not merely a contractual obligation.

"For me, it's a piece of paper I need to sign. I'm here because Mohun Bagan Super Giant wanted me and I wanted to come. But if any one of the parties is not happy, the best thing is to shake hands and leave," he said in a conversation with The Times of India.

A celebrated former goalkeeper still highly regarded at Atletico Madrid, Molina has strong ties to Indian football, having led ATK to an ISL title in 2016.

He highlighted that victory as one of the defining moments of his career, stating, “Every time I win any title that is the best experience. To win the ISL in 2016, the title in the Hong Kong league (with Kitchee). These are all parts of my best experiences.”

Mohun Bagan Super Giant played out a 1-1 draw away to Odisha in the Matchweek 8 fixture, just before the league took a break for the international window. The Mariners stayed in second place on the table, with four wins, two draws, and one loss from seven matches this season.

“We'll try to win the ISL (again) and play in the AFC next year to prove that an Indian team can be strong in Asia tournaments as well,” he said.

Molina’s side returns after the international break with a home match against Jamshedpur FC on Saturday 23 November.
