Mohun Bagan Super Giant head coach Antonio Habas was delighted with his team after they beat Kerala Blasters FC in a seven-goal thriller in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Wednesday.

Mohun Bagan SG recorded their 12th win of the season at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, which helped them go level on points with table toppers Mumbai City FC.

Armando Sadiku’s goal gave the Mariners the lead going into half-time. However, the match turned on its head in the second half where six goals were scored. Sadiku saw his opener cancelled out by Vibin Mohanan and despite scoring again in the second half, Dimitrios Diamantakos was quick to restore parity for the hosts.

However, the Mariners reclaimed their lead when Deepak Tangri headed home from a corner late in the game. Substitute Jason Cummings also joined the party with an injury time goal before Diamantakos reduced the deficit. However, despite a valiant effort, the Blasters fell short in the end.

For Mohun Bagan SG all of their three foreign forwards were among the goals. Sadiku and Cummings were on the scoresheet while Petratos supplied an assist, capping off an incredible win for the Mariners.

Habas heaped praise on Sadiku but also was happy with the performances of Petratos and Cummings.

“(Sadiku’s performance was) very good. We had the opportunity to (create and) have the chances. The good thing is that we have three strikers with the possibility to score goals. This is very important for our team because (it helps if) we have one player injured. A sending off and you have the opportunity to play with the other two. I’m very happy with Dimi(tri Petratos), Sadiku and Jason (Cummings),” he said in the post-match press conference.

Mohun Bagan SG conceded three goals or more for the first time since their 0-4 defeat to FC Goa in December. In their previous seven matches, the team had only shipped five goals while keeping four clean sheets during this time.

When asked if he was unhappy with his team’s defensive performance, Habas said: “Today, no. We knew that it was a difficult match. We had too much pressure from the supporters, too much pressure from the match because we played against East Bengal FC three days ago and it was a very intense match in the derby. And now travel.. Many things. In the end, I would have preferred to win 4-0 but in 4-3, we got the three points which is more important.”

Mohun Bagan SG have scored the most goals this season, having netted 39 goals in 18 games. Since Habas took charge of the team in December, they have scored 19 goals in eight games.

Discussing his team’s philosophy, the Spaniard said: “It depends on the players you have. One intelligent coach comes, they choose the capacity to choose the way the team wants to play, one way or another.

If you have the right balance between attack and defence, maybe you (can) have success. It’s not a magic idea: today we need to play attacking or today we need to play defensive. No. It depends on the players you have.”
