Sunil Chhetri has added another milestone to his glittering career as he has become the joint leading all-time goalscorer in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL).

The Bengaluru FC captain achieved this feat when he scored in the 61st minute against FC Goa in Match No 69 of the Hero ISL 2021-22 season.

The 37-year-old scored his 48th goal in the Hero ISL to equal Ferran Corominas’ tally after he headed home a cross from Prince Ibara to equalise for Bengaluru FC against FC Goa.

The Indian captain has had to wait agonisingly long for the landmark goal as he broke an eleven-match goal drought to net the elusive strike that put his joint top of the pile.

Chhetri is probably the greatest goalscorer the country has ever seen. In international football, he is tied fifth with Argentine legend Lionel Messi in the fifth spot which makes his joint second among active international goalscorers behind Cristiano Ronaldo

Also the highest capped Indian international footballer, Chhetri has made an immense impact in the Hero ISL. His journey in the competition commenced with Mumbai City FC in the Hero ISL 2015 season where he became the first-ever Indian player to score a hat-trick in ISL history. Thereafter, the Khel Ratna awardee spent another season at Mumbai City FC before beginning the next campaign with Bengaluru FC when they joined the Hero ISL fold in 2017.

The Bengaluru FC forward’s best season in the Hero ISL came in the 2017-18 campaign as netted 14 times in 21 games, and was a vital cog leading the Blues into the finals in their first-ever ISL season.

The captain was instrumental again in the 2018-19 season as he helped the Blues win the title.

Chhetri has been a regular goalscorer for Bengaluru FC and has finished as the top Indian goalscorer in five out of the six Hero ISL seasons that he’s been part of.
