Mumbai City FC beat Bengaluru FC 3-1 at the Fatorda Stadium on Tuesday to extend their unbeaten run to eight games in Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21. The Islanders began the match on the front foot, scoring twice within 15 minutes and added a third through substitute Bartholomew Ogbeche in the second period.

Speaking at the post-match press conference after his side won, Mumbai head coach Sergio Lobera expressed his delight with the start that his side made to the match. “It’s very important for us to start the games well and I’m very happy with this. We had a lot of chances to score the third goal and we need to improve on this. But I’m very happy with the start of the game,” he said.

After Mourtada Fall had broken the deadlock for Mumbai, Bipin Singh netted the side’s second with a sumptuous strike in the 15th minute. “My job is to increase and improve the level of Indian players. I am very happy with the full squad. Now, Bipin is playing very well but the most important thing is the collective job and the team is working very well,” Lobera said.

Tuesday’s clash was Mumbai’s second game in three days and the 43-year-old went on to praise his players’ attitude. “We played two games in three days, it’s not easy. We need to save the players and avoid injuries. I am very happy with the attitude of the players coming from the bench,” Lobera said.

When asked if his side may have peaked too soon this season, Lobera replied: “It’s good. I’m happy. I don’t want to change anything. The results are good. We had a very short pre-season. It’s not easy to implement a new style of playing with 24 new players but I am happy. I think it’s very important to keep up the level.”

Meanwhile, Bengaluru head coach Carles Cuadrat demanded improvement from his players following a third defeat in a row. “We will have to improve a lot in a lot of different aspects. No excuses. I think Mumbai have a more consistent squad and more consistent way to play the game. As a club, we have to understand that maybe our role now is to try to play the semi-finals because ATK Mohun Bagan and Mumbai are showing that they are going to fight for the championship,” he said.
