One of FC Goa’s Indian recruits for the upcoming Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) campaign, Redeem Tlang has spent most of his career playing in the Northeast. After beginning his footballing journey with Shillong Lajong FC in the Hero I-League, he joined Hero ISL outfit NorthEast United FC in 2018. After two successful seasons with the Highlanders, Redeem has made the switch to the west coast in search of a new challenge.

“I always wanted the experience of playing outside because I only played in the Northeast. I wanted to experience that (feeling of playing outside). FC Goa came at the right time and I chose them,” Redeem said in an interview with khelnow.com.

Although Redeem made his breakthrough in the 2018-19 season, his first stint in the Hero ISL came in the inaugural edition of the league when he joined the Highlanders on loan in 2014. However, then just 19, the talented winger did not get much game time, but amassed a lot of experience from the likes of Joan Capdevila, who was a part of NorthEast.

“First season, I was very young. I got experience by playing with big names like Joan Capdevila. I got to learn many things from them. When they came calling back in 2018, before signing, I challenged myself that from this season, I should prove that I can play here. That is the reason I went back there and proved myself,” the 25-year-old attacker said.

During his time with NorthEast United, Redeem helped the Highlanders reach the semi-finals in his first season back at the club. Playing under former head coach Eelco Schattorie, Redeem credited the team’s performances to the Dutchman, he said, “Our relationship till today is very good. That season, it was good for me and the team as well. The team hadn’t been in the playoffs since the Hero ISL started and that season was a memorable one. He (Eelco) played an important role in that season.”

While speaking about his ambitions with FC Goa and participation in the AFC Champions League with the Gaurs in the upcoming season, Redeem said, “I hope we can take FC Goa to the Hero ISL trophy, play well in the AFC Champions League and go further in that competition. AFC Champions League is a big stage for the club and everyone, for me as well. I am looking forward to it.”
