Indian Super League (ISL) side FC Goa return to continental action as they prepare to host Iraqi giants Al-Zawraa in their opening fixture of the AFC Champions League Two group stage at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Wednesday. It marks the Gaurs’ first appearance in an Asian tournament since the 2021 edition of the AFC Champions League and they will be eager to make their mark.

FC Goa, who won the Kalinga Super Cup 2024, qualified for the ACL Two group stage after beating Oman’s Al Seeb in the Preliminary Stage knockout clash.

Drawn in a challenging group, FC Goa will also face Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol and Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr in October. However, the opener against Al-Zawraa provides both an immediate test and an opportunity to set the tone for their campaign.

Their opening opponents Al-Zawraa, arrive with a weight of history and expectation. The Baghdad-based side are one of Iraq’s most decorated clubs, having won the Iraqi Premier League a record 14 times. They have also lifted numerous domestic cups and have regular experience of competing in Asian tournaments, including appearances in the AFC Champions League.

For the Gaurs, this is a chance to build on the lessons learned from their first continental adventure four years ago. In 2021, they were placed in a tough group alongside Persepolis, Al Wahda and Al Rayyan. Despite being debutants, FC Goa held their own, drawing three matches and finishing above Al Rayyan to claim third place. Those performances, particularly their defensive resilience and ability to stay composed against seasoned Asian clubs remain a source of pride and motivation as they step onto the continental stage again.

Continental nights bring a different energy and with Al Nassr and FC Istiklol awaiting in the upcoming matches, a positive result in the opener would not only boost morale but also keep the Gaurs in strong contention for qualification.

As the Gaurs step out under the Fatorda floodlights on Wednesday, the occasion will remind them of 2021 but this time they will look to go one better, starting with a statement against Al-Zawraa.
