NorthEast United FC's newest addition, Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia, feels he has found the right place to develop himself after signing a two-year deal with the Highlanders.

He becomes NEUFC's first summer signing, as the club looks to build on the momentum from last season.

After securing a contract extension with Indian Super League (ISL) Golden Boot and Golden Ball winner Alaaeddine Ajaraie, the Highlanders wasted no time in bringing in one of the best attacking prospects from the I-League.

Better known as Rinzuala, Lalbiaknia has established himself as one of the top strikers in the I-League over the past two seasons, scoring 27 goals in 39 matches for Aizawl FC.

He became the first Indian player to score double-digit goals in two consecutive I-League seasons.

The 24-year-old will now be looking to take his game to the next level with the challenges that come with playing in the top-flight league, the ISL.

“The ISL is a step up — it’s faster, more physical and more tactical — but I am excited for the challenge,” Lalbiaknia said in an interview with RevSportz.

He rose to prominence in the 2023-24 I-League campaign, where he netted 15 goals, breaking the record for most goals scored by an Indian in a single I-League season, surpassing Sunil Chhetri (2013-14) and Mohammed Rafi (2009-10).

Now with his local side in the ISL, the Mizo-born player feels there's a stronger sense of identity and a greater opportunity to play for his community.

“It means a lot to me and my people to represent a club that represents Northeast India. There’s a strong emotional connection with the people,” said the forward.

Under Juan Pedro Benali, the Highlanders have placed considerable faith in their Indian contingent, a philosophy evident in the Spanish coach's readiness to field young talents like Macarton Nickson, Thoi Singh, and Buanthanglun Samte.

Lalbiaknia believes that this trust from the coach was a key factor in his decision to join the club.

“When you speak to the coach, you see how much he believes in you, the trust he has in you — and as a young player, that’s all you need. I feel that with Benali and the entire coaching staff, NorthEast United FC is the right place for me to grow, learn and perform,” he stated.

The forward is particularly enthusiastic at the prospect of training alongside Ajaraie, believing it will significantly elevate his game and allow him to showcase those improvements on the field.

“Ajaraie had a record-breaking season. His movement, finishing, and ability to link up play are world-class. I’m looking forward to training and playing alongside him. There’s so much I can learn from him, and I hope we can develop a strong understanding on the pitch,” he commented.
