Mumbai City FC confirmed Diego Forlan as their marquee player for the third season of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) this past weekend. The veteran striker from Uruguay, who has captained his side in the FIFA World Cup, began his career in the youth set-up of Independiente before moving to Premier League giants Manchester United. The 37-year-old frontman won the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield with United.“Happy to play this season for Mumbai City FC. Meri jaan Mumbai I'm coming.” Forlan wrote on Twitter.Forlan became a cult hero for the Red Devils before moving to Spain in 2004 where he terrorised opposition defences week in, week out while representing Villareal and Atlético Madrid. Viewed as one of the greatest Uruguayan players of all time with 112 appearances and 36 goals, he is both a two-time Pichichi and European Golden Shoe winner. He also won the Golden Ball award at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.Co-owner of Mumbai City FC Ranbir Kapoor enthused at the prospect of Forlan spearheading his side’s attack. “It’s really exciting to have a player of Diego’s quality play for us in the upcoming season. He’s one of the best in the business and I can’t wait to see him on the field fighting it out for Mumbai,” he said.The veteran forward joins Mumbai City FC from Uruguayan outfit Peñarol and comes with experience of football in Asia having played for J2 League side Cerezo Osaka previously.
