Mumbai City FC have been dealt a blow to their title defence as left-back Vignesh Dakshinamurthy has been ruled out for upto six weeks due to an ankle injury, the club confirmed in an official release on Friday.

Vignesh was injured after he was tackled by FC Goa’s Leander D’Cunha during his team’s 3-0 win on Monday and the full-back will now be out for the rest of the calendar year.

“As per clinical examinations and scans, Vignesh has suffered a contusion and a sprain in his ankle, injuring the medial and lateral ligaments. He is expected to miss approximately up to six weeks,” the club’s statement read.

The 23-year-old was a key figure in Mumbai City FC’s season last year appearing in 22 matches for Sergio Lobera’s side as they did the League Winners’ Shield and ISL title double.

Mumbai City FC will look to Mohamed Rakip to deputise for the injured Vignesh and the former Kerala Blasters full-back performed admirably after replacing the injured Vignesh on monday.

The Islanders next face Hyderabad FC on Saturday.
