The League Winners of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 season, Mumbai City FC, will learn their fate in the 2022 AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Champions League Group Stage draw, scheduled on January 17 at 4:30pm IST.
Mumbai City FC created history in the Hero ISL as they became the first team to win both - the League Winners’ Shield as well as the ISL Champions Title in the 2020-21 season. This led them to qualify for the AFC Champions League - becoming the second Indian team to qualify after FC Goa in the previous season.
Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal won the 2021 AFC Champions League as they defeated Korean club Pohang Steelers with a scoreline of 2-0 in the finals. On the contrary, FC Goa failed to make the cut after being unable to qualify for the knockout stages. However, the Gaurs impressed in their debut campaign as they earned three creditable draws.
The Islanders will be making their debut in the AFC Champions League and all eyes will be on head coach Des Buckingham as he aims to mastermind Mumbai City FC into the knockout stages of the competition, which would make them the first-ever Indian club to do so.
Mumbai City FC currently stand third in the Hero ISL league table with 17 points and are in need of the three points to not let their top four spot slip-up.
