Mumbai City FC midfielder Rowllin Borges has been ruled out for the rest of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 campaign with a knee injury that has kept him out of action for most parts of this season.

The defending champions confirmed the development on their website on Thursday.

“Mumbai City can confirm that vice-captain Rowllin Borges continues to nurse an injury to his knee and will miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season. The 29-year-old midfielder is recovering well and will continue his rehabilitation with the club,” the club’s statement read.

“We wish Rowllin a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch soon,” it added.

Borges has played just fifty minutes across four matches this season and has struggled with injury. The central midfielder played a key role in Mumbai City FC's campaign last season when they won the League Winners’ Shield and Hero ISL trophy double, appearing in 20 matches, scoring twice and assisting once.

The 29-year-old’s absence due to injury has also been felt at the national level where Igor Stimac has not been able to pick him due to his injury troubles.

Borges is one of the more complete midfielders in Indian football with a great ability to break up play along with his top-notch passing range.

The Islanders though have cover for that position after they recently signed Vinit Rai on loan from Odisha FC.

Mumbai City FC take on league leaders Kerala Blasters FC in a big clash on Sunday.
