Materazzi: We will do whatever it takes to win
Following back-to-back defeats, Chennayin FC returned to form in their last Hero Indian Super League 2015 match against FC Goa as they registered a thumping 4-0 win and team head coach Marco Materazzi wants his team to continue their impressive show when they play hosts Mumbai City FC at the DY Patil Stadium on Friday.
Last year, Mumbai found Chennai too hot to handle losing 5-1 and 3-0 their away and home encounters respectively. However, despite a clear psychological advantage Materazzi, speaking to the media on Thursday, said they weren’t going into the match with the results from last year at the forefront of their minds.
“Last year was a completely different tournament…What I hope is to have a victory and even though is going to be tough playing against Mumbai, we’ll do whatever it takes to win,” Materazzi said.
One of the favourites before the league commenced, Chennai suffered losses at the hands of Atlético de Kolkata and Delhi Dynamos FC. Materazzi admitted the win against FC Goa was very important to his team. “When I win, I’m always happy because that’s what I’ve worked for. Best thing about the last game was not to have a single goal scored by the opponents. I think it was a real important game for us to build up confidence because our players really needed it,” the Italian said.
He continued: “For the next game, I hope we keep this awareness level. In the first game, I admit that there were many mistakes on the defence. In the second one, we were unlucky and we didn’t have this awareness in the first twenty minutes. But then, we ended up having a really good game. Our opponents were an expert team who knew that they had to score one goal and keep it likewise for the rest of the game. In the last match, we did great and hope to see the same performance in the next one as well."
The Friday’s match will also see the return of local boy Jayesh Rane to Mumbai in the Chennaiyin blue. The 24-year-old striker, who accompanied Materazzi all through the press conference, drew plenty of praise from his coach. “He was one of the first players to be confirmed. I think his attitude is very European and he’s thinking in the right way. I think that he can also make a difference in the national team. I hope they’ll call him from January onwards. He is young and has a lot of room for improvement. Nonetheless, his mentality is on the right path,” Materazzi said of Rane.
