The Spaniard who took charge of the Blue Tigers in July 2024 led the team in eight matches, winning just one match. India drew four games under Marquez and suffered defeat in three.
The 56-year-old was also the head coach of FC Goa in the Indian Super League (ISL) last season guiding them to the semi-finals. Marquez has been one of the finest coaches in the ISL having taken his teams – Hyderabad FC and FC Goa – to the playoffs in four out of the five seasons that he has managed in. He also led Hyderabad FC to ISL Cup glory in 2021-22.
The AIFF will make an appointment to replace Marquez in due course. India’s next assignment is a double-header against Singapore in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. The Blue Tigers are bottom of their group after picking up just one point in their first two matches.
