Mohun Bagan Super Giant vs Mumbai City FC

The evening kick-off in Kolkata presents a mouth-watering clash between two of the league's heavyweights. Mohun Bagan Super Giant remain at the top of the table with 13 points, though their flawless streak was recently halted in a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Bengaluru FC.

They will be up against, Mumbai City FC who are also unbeaten in the season and are third in the standings with 11 points. The Islanders enter this fixture riding high after a 2-1 victory over Inter Kashi FC, where a stoppage-time first-half goal from Noufal PN and a swift 52nd-minute strike from captain Lallianzuala Chhangte secured three points, even as Mumbai held on with ten men in the dying moments.

Historically, Mumbai City FC have been a massive thorn in the side of Mohun Bagan SG, dominating their head-to-head encounters. In 12 previous ISL meetings, the Islanders boast seven victories compared to a solitary win for the Mariners, alongside four draws.

Speaking ahead of the heavyweight clash, Mohun Bagan SG head coach Sergio Lobera acknowledged the tactical challenge posed by the Islanders. “Mumbai City need the possession of the ball. I don't think they are comfortable with only waiting for the counter-attacks,” Lobera explained.

Emphasising collective effort over individual brilliance in such high-stakes encounters, he added, “I don't think the individuals can change one game. Finally, you need to compete against one team. You need to play as a team and you need to win the game as a team.”

Mariners' midfielder Lalengmawia Ralte, also known as Apuia, highlighted his seamless adaptation to the squad's expansive system. “This season, we’re playing a bit more attacking football,” Apuia noted, eager to impose that style against his opponents. “Personally, I think it suits me better.”

For Mumbai City FC, the objective is to assert their championship credentials by conquering the league leaders in their own backyard. Head coach Petr Krátký expressed confidence in his squad’s mentality.

“We know Mohun Bagan are one of the strongest teams in India and playing them in front of their fans will be a huge challenge. However, we believe in our preparation, our identity, and our ability to compete at the highest level,” Krátký explained. “For us, it’s about showing the right attitude, energy, and togetherness on the pitch, because if we do that, I truly believe we can achieve something special despite how difficult the game will be.”

Islanders’ defender Nuno Reis highlighted the importance of defensive discipline to counter the Mariners’ attacking threat. “In a high-pressure away game like this, especially against a team like Mohun Bagan with strong attacking players and a big crowd behind them, the most important thing for us is to stay disciplined, work collectively as a unit, and keep a clean sheet,” Reis noted. “If we defend well together and play with confidence, we give ourselves the best possible chance to succeed.”

NorthEast United FC vs Odisha FC

NorthEast United FC head into the fixture riding a massive wave of confidence after securing their first victory of the campaign. The Highlanders currently sit seventh in the standings with six points, coming off a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over a high-flying Jamshedpur FC.

Conversely, Odisha FC arrive in Guwahati desperately seeking redemption. The Juggernauts remain ninth in the table with two points after suffering a heavy 1-5 defeat to Mohun Bagan SG in their last outing.

The two sides share a highly competitive history in the ISL. In their 22 previous meetings, Odisha FC hold a slight edge with nine victories to NorthEast United’s seven, alongside six draws. Their most recent encounter produced an entertaining 2-2 stalemate, setting the stage for another closely-contested battle as both teams look to tip the historic scales in their favour.

Speaking ahead of their home fixture, NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Pedro Benali urged his team to stay resilient despite the impending challenge. “Champions are not the ones who only win trophies for me. A champion is the one who falls down, stands up, and fights again. That’s life, that’s football,” Benali stated. “We will miss important players, yes, but life continues. We have to stand up, trust ourselves, and keep fighting for every point, especially at home.”

Highlanders’ midfielder Bekey Oram expressed his readiness to step up and deliver for the team. “I just follow the coach’s game plan and trust the team. Playing with experienced players makes everything easier, and for me, NorthEast United is my home now – whenever I get the chance, I will give my best and try to score for the team.”

Odisha FC head coach T.G. Purushothaman, on the other hand, emphasised the need for an immediate and strong reaction from his squad. “It was a tough result in the last game, but we’ve taken the learnings, addressed our weaknesses, and prepared well for this challenge,” Purushothaman said. “Even with a few injury concerns, we believe in the strength of our squad, and the aim is to respond with a strong performance and secure a positive result for our fans.”

Echoing his coach’s determination to bounce back, Odisha FC midfielder Lalthathanga Khawlhring added, “We are focused on giving our best and getting three points before the break. The team is motivated, and with the continued support from our fans – whether at the stadium or from afar – we are ready to put in a strong performance for them.”
