Kolkata derby is one of the biggest fixtures in Asia: MBSG's Jamie Maclaren
The Aussie forward shared his thoughts on joining the Mariners, playing in the Kolkata derby, and more.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant forward Jamie Maclaren highlighted the significance and storied legacy of the Kolkata Derby after experiencing this thrilling encounter twice in October.
The Australian forward joined the defending Indian Super League (ISL) League Shield winners this summer, following a successful stint with A-League side Melbourne City FC. The 31-year-old striker, who represented the Socceroos in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has strengthened the Mariners' attack with his offensive skills and invaluable experience from a distinguished career.
Maclaren made his Mohun Bagan SG debut against NorthEast United FC after missing the Durand Cup and the opening ISL fixture due to a shoulder injury.
He went on to score in consecutive matches against city rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club and East Bengal FC, marking his impact on the much-anticipated Kolkata Derbies.
"I missed all the pre-season because of a serious injury that caused me a lot of pain. I didn't think I would play in the first ten games," Maclaren told RevSportz.
The forward experienced the Kolkata Derby fever for the first time, as fans across the city held high hopes for their beloved teams.
Reflecting on the occasion, Maclaren said, "Knowing that I was playing in these big fixtures, you could see the fans around the streets all talking about the derby. Obviously, I was getting to a point where I was fit enough to play, and the week before, I had scored against Mohammedan SC with my head, which has caused me problems."

Maclaren shared his pleasure and enthusiasm for playing in this superlative rivalry by saying, "Look, it's a fixture that's the biggest in India, one of the biggest in Asia."
"I've watched it previously before I'd signed for this football club, and it was just an amazing feeling to be a part of a derby game. But to get us off the start with a nice goal and many more derbies to come, you can't be playing in front of 60,000," he added.
The Mohun Bagan SG striker expressed his delight at the club's century-old legacy and remarkable success. Maclaren shared that the Mariners' relentless drive for excellence was compelling enough to inspire him to join the ISL side.
"The history speaks for itself, but also, I know a few players that have played here (MBSG) in the past, not only now but also in the previous years. They're the most successful, and I think something that I did in Australia was winning trophies. I want to be a part of a team that's always consistently striving for greatness, and that's why I've come here," Maclaren remarked.
"It's a huge club, a huge organization. The city lives and breathes football. There's no better feeling than walking out into a stadium in our home games, whether we're playing a big derby or a smaller game. Whatever is in our minds, it's always about winning and having a high standard. The fans have high expectations, and that's something that comes with getting 30,000 plus nearly at every single game, which is important. And that's what I want to do. I want to play," he explained.

Maclaren heaped praise on the club's loyal fanbase, who turn out in numbers for every game, showering their undying support and unconditional love for their beloved club.
When asked about the supporters and how they motivate the players with lively chants and heartwarming activities, Maclaren responded, "Unbelievable! I haven't played in an atmosphere since playing at the World Cup against Argentina. Just so loud from minute one to minute 90 and a fantastic atmosphere. It's a big reason why I came here: there's always an expectation to win trophies, to perform, to entertain, but also the way they show love for football."
"I haven't seen too many countries like that. I had a chat with Dimi (Petratos) not too long ago, and we kind of referenced the passion. The noise is similar to a South American game, like River Plate or Boca Juniors. The flares were going off when I scored the goal, and it’s just goosebumps. What I'll say is that the fans have given me goosebumps, and I'm sure that's why a lot of players come here and are very proud to wear the jersey," he concluded.
