Jamshedpur FC defender Ashutosh Mehta revealed how Khalid Jamil has played an anchoring role in his football career, guiding him extensively on off-the-field issues over the years.

Mehta joined the Men of Steel ahead of the 2024-25 season and featured in the 133rd Durand Cup, where he delivered standout performances under Jamil's guidance.

The urge, zeal, and spirit to perform again on the biggest platform and return to his best were evident in Mehta as he overcame all obstacles on his road to a roaring comeback. The versatile defender has been a mainstay for Jamshedpur FC's backline with his sublime tackles and expertise in dealing with difficult situations.

With Jamil at the helm, Jamshedpur FC recorded their best start in league history, winning three of their opening four games. The Men of Steel have secured 12 out of a possible 15 points in the first few matches, making a strong start to the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season.

However, following the red card and suspension of experienced centre-back Stephen Eze, Jamil's men suffered back-to-back heavy defeats, dealing a significant blow to their positive start.

Mehta expressed optimism about bouncing back after the international break, highlighting the team’s determination to perform at their best and reach new heights this season. The defender emphasized the importance of teamwork and collective spirit, urging his teammates to stay united in their quest to return to winning ways.

“The best player of the team, the most skilful player, the most tactically smart player—that player is the team itself," Mehta told KhelNow.

“Sometimes, it’s more important to have a good team than just a good squad. As long as we stay united and play as a team, we can achieve great things,” he added.

Mehta highlighted what Jamil brings to the team as a coach, emphasizing his fighting attitude and unwavering commitment to the game.

Reflecting on how the Indian head coach has been instrumental in his development as a footballer, the defender remarked, “The best part about Khalid Sir is there’s so much to learn from him. He has had a big impact on my life both on and off the pitch. His work ethic, preparation, attention to detail—he’s relentlessly committed to constantly improving and evolving.”

“Khalid Sir is 100% professional. Even off the pitch, he’s incredibly dedicated. He wakes up early and does all those video sessions, analyzing the team and players. He’s so deeply invested in football; it’s inspiring to see someone so committed," he continued.

The seasoned defender made his international debut against Oman in 2021 under Igor Stimac's tenure as head coach. Since then, Mehta has not featured for the Blue Tigers in recent years. However, he remains hopeful of making a return to the national team, stating,

“The result isn’t in my hands. What’s in my control is the effort I put in, the sweat I pour out in training, and my commitment to proving myself every day. Coach Manolo Marquez is a top coach and a great person. He understands Indian football and the players deeply."

“I feel that, having come this far, it’s essential to believe in myself. Belief and constant self-improvement are what matter most,” he concluded.
