Mumbai City FC, on Tuesday, announced head coach Jorge Costa has penned a one-year contract extension, which will keep him at the club until May 2020.

To recall, the Portuguese manager joined Mumbai back in August 2018 and enjoyed a highly successful Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2018-19 campaign, guiding the Islanders till the semi-finals.

Life in India, however, began on a rocky note for the 47-year-old as Mumbai managed only four points from their first four matches this season. On the back of a crushing 5-0 defeat to FC Goa in their fourth match, fans and pundits began writing Mumbai off from the top four race. With their backs to the wall, Costa slowly began to work his magic and galvanized the team. The Islanders bounced back in emphatic fashion and went on a club-record nine-match unbeaten run. The former Portuguese international's highly pragmatic counter-attacking style turned out to be quite effective. To put it into context, during their nine-match unbeaten streak, the Islanders kept a whopping six clean sheets while scoring 18 goals.

The purple patch helped Mumbai finish the league stage on the third position in the table, earning them a semi-final clash against FC Goa. Despite a gritty 1-0 victory over the Gaurs in the second leg, a 5-1 drubbing in the first leg meant Mumbai's title dreams would come to an end. With the extension coming into effect, Costa will have another shot at the title next season.

However, the more immediate challenge at hand for Costa will be the Hero Super Cup. Mumbai will begin their campaign in the knockout tournament against Chennaiyin FC on March 29.
