ISL will only bring out the best in me: NEUFC's Alaaeddine Ajaraie
The Moroccan elaborates on the intensity of the ISL, his decision to join the Highlanders, and more.
Alaaeddine Ajaraie has made a sensational start to his journey in India. The NorthEast United FC forward wasted no time in making his mark during the Durand Cup, scoring three goals and providing two assists. His standout performance came in the final, where he both scored and assisted in the team’s remarkable comeback against Mohun Bagan Super Giant, helping them secure their first-ever trophy.
Ajaraie became the third Moroccan addition to the squad, joining Hamza Regragui and Mohammed Ali Bemammer. He and Regragui had previously played together at RS Berkane during the 2019-20 season.
“The club was interested in signing me last year too. Of course, Moroccan players are one of the reasons I came to NorthEast United FC. My friend Hamza Regragui encouraged and motivated me to join NorthEast United FC,” said Ajaraie in an interview with KhelNow.
The 31-year-old has extended his prolific goalscoring run into the Indian Super League (ISL), finding the back of the net in all four of his appearances, while also providing two assists. Impressively, he has only failed to score once this season across both the Durand Cup and ISL.

With this red-hot form, he became only the second player, after Elano Blumer, to score in each of his first four ISL matches. Notably, only Bartholomew Ogbeche and Tomi Juric (five each) have scored more goals in their first four games for NorthEast United FC in the ISL.
“I am fully focused on my work on the field and try to help my teammates, and it helps me get results in matches. No player can achieve anything on the field without the assistance of their teammates. As for the coach, he has full confidence in me, and that is the most important thing,” the forward stated.
NorthEast United FC currently sits sixth in the table, accumulating five points from four matches. However, they could have been in a better position had they managed to hold on to their leads. Despite this, the impact of the new signings—especially Ajaraie—has been exceptional for Juan Pedro Benali’s squad.
While it’s rare for players to adapt so quickly to a new country and league, Ajaraie has made the transition look effortless. He is eager to maintain his impressive form and lead his team as the ISL resumes, with NorthEast United set to host Chennaiyin FC in Guwahati on Thursday.
“Frankly, I was surprised to see the high competition level and professionalism in the Indian Super League (ISL). I am happy to have joined the ISL, and it will only bring out the best in me,” he said.
“India is a beautiful country. The people are kind and respectful, and I will always reciprocate their affection. As a foreigner, anyone would want to feel at home, and I feel safe and at home here,” Ajaraie added.
