ISL Team of the Year 2024: A look at the nominees for defenders and goalkeepers
The voting for goalkeepers and defenders is now open and will close at 12PM IST on 29 December 2024.
The Indian Super League (ISL) in 2024 saw plenty of drama unfold as the second half of the 2023-24 campaign saw a nerve-wracking title race go right down to the wire.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant emerged champions ahead of Mumbai City FC after the former pipped the latter in an intense final-day affair. However, the Islanders bounced back to beat the Mariners in a replay of the final-day league clash in the ISL Cup final to win the piece of silverware.
The new season saw the teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs last season start with a bang and upset the pecking order of the league. However, with time champions Mohun Bagan SG restored their dominance and reassumed the top spot in the standings.
As 2024 draws to a close, we will give the fans a chance to pick their Team of the Year

The voting for goalkeepers and defenders is now open and will close at 12PM IST on 29 December 2024.
Here’s a look at the nominees:
Goalkeeper
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu vs Vishal Kaith
The battle between two of India’s best goalkeepers will pan out in the TOTY polls as well. Kaith has been a mainstay in the Mohun Bagan SG side which has been almost perfect in 2024. The custodian has kept 12 clean sheets in 2024.
As for Sandhu, after a difficult 2023-24, Bengaluru FC started the new season with a bang and didn’t concede a goal in their first five matches in 2024-25, setting a new club record. With eight clean sheets to his name in 2024, Sandhu has a strong case to be picked as the goalkeeper of 2024.
Defender
Right-back: Rahul Bheke vs Amey Ranawade
Two former Mumbai City FC full-backs vie for being the best right-back of the year albeit in different shirts. Bheke played a crucial role in leading the Islanders to their second ISL Cup triumph in 2023-24 before being part of a solid Bengaluru FC defence that has become the foundation of the Blues’ title-charge in 2024-25.
Ranawade has been equally consistent for Odisha FC helping them reach the semi-finals for the first time in 2023-24 and is a very important player in Sergio Lobera’s setup. He does have an assist up his sleeve every now and then just like Bheke has the knack to score the odd goal. Who are you picking?
Centre-back: Tiri vs Odei Onaindia
Two of the best-ever centre backs in the ISL, there is always precious to choose between Tiri and Odei. The two centre-backs were instrumental in their respective teams’ success in 2024 were Tiri helped Mumbai City FC win the ISL Cup while Odei led the Gaurs’ march to the semi-finals, a return to the playoffs after an absence of three years.
Tiri and Odei are models of consistency and examples for budding defenders to follow across the team boundaries and will go down as one of ISL’s all-time greats. A tough one to pick indeed.
Centre-back: Mourtada Fall vs Mehtab Singh
Once again two former teammates go head to head for the second centre-back spot in the Fans’ TOTY. Mourtada Fall now with Odisha FC has been a rock in the heart of their defence and also a constant threat on set-pieces. The Senegalese defender became the player with the most headed goals in ISL in 2024.
Mehtab has gone from strength to strength in Mumbai City FC colours and has now also cemented himself in the Indian squad. The 26-year-old also displayed his versatility playing in full-back positions last season at times and will go head to head again Fall for a spot in the Fans’ TOTY.
Left-back: Subhasish Bose vs Aakash Sangwan
Subhasish Bose has been India’s best left-back for a while now and he continues to show immaculate consistency. But in Ashish Sangwan he has a challenger not just for the left-back role in the national team but also for the left-back slot in the ISL Fans’ TOTY.
Sangwan has been excellent since his switch to FC Goa and has thrived under Manolo Marquez to become one of the best attacking full-backs in the league. His consistency earned him a call-up to the national team for the first time in his career and is expected to challenge Bose’s monopoly over that position. What a battle.
