The Indian Super League (ISL) in 2024 saw plenty of drama unfold as the second half of the 2023-24 campaign saw a nerve-wracking title race go right down to the wire.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant emerged champions ahead of Mumbai City FC after the former pipped the latter in an intense final-day affair. However, the Islanders bounced back to beat the Mariners in a replay of the final-day league clash in the ISL Cup final to win the piece of silverware.

The new season saw the teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs last season start with a bang and upset the pecking order of the league. However, with time champions Mohun Bagan SG restored their dominance and reassumed the top spot in the standings.

As 2024 draws to a close, we will give the fans a chance to pick their Team of the Year.

Here’s a look at the nominees:

Right centre-midfield: Ahmed Jahouh vs Lalengmawia Ralte

Jahouh is regarded as one of the best foreign players every to have graced the ISL and he continues to be the ultimate central midfielder who is an expert at pulling the strings and holding things together for his team. Jahouh was excellent in the Odisha FC midfield in 2024 as they reached the semi-finals for the first time.

Lalengmawia Ralte has been the best Indian central midfielder in the ISL for the past few seasons and he displayed his quality in Mumbai City FC’s win over Mohun Bagan SG in the ISL Cup final last year where was adjudged the Player of the Match. He has joined the Mariners in ISL 2024-25 and has established himself as a regular for Jose Molina and has maintained his consistency in green and maroon.

Left centre midfield: Yoell van Nieff vs Borja Herrera

Yoell van Nieff has been Mumbai City FC’s best player in ISL 2024-25 so far and also played a huge role in their ISL Cup triumph last season. The Dutchman has kept play ticking for the Islanders and also provided defensive cover for his team. He has four goal contributions to his name so far this season.

Borja Herrera has settled well into life at FC Goa and has been a key player in Manolo Marquez’s setup having reunited with the Spaniard after their stint together at Hyderabad FC. He has six goal contributions to his name this season.

Central attacking midfield: Madih Talal vs Hugo Boumous

Madih Talal’s year may have had a premature end but he shone bright for both East Bengal FC and Punjab FC. He was the heart and soul of the Shers’ midfield as they staged a second-half resurgence to come within touching distance of the playoff spots in their debut campaign. It took a while for him to get going with the Red and Gold brigade, but he had started to show his class before injury struck.

Hugo Boumous is a player transformed at Odisha FC and has been one of their best players this season. With three goals and four assists so far this season, Boumous has been central to all of the Kalinga Warriors’ attacking endeavours. His magic has kept Odisha FC in the race for the League Shield in 2024-25.
