I want to help Mohammedan SC succeed: Midfielder Amarjit Singh Kiyam
The Mohammedan SC midfielder reflects on his football journey, his aspirations with the Kolkata-based club, and more.
Mohammedan SC midfielder Amarjit Singh Kiyam aims to elevate his game once again with the newly promoted side in the Indian Super League (ISL).
The captain of the U-17 Indian team at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup has played for several clubs in the ISL but has yet to reach the level he envisions for himself.
Now, with his new club in the ISL, he is eager to achieve those goals and take his game to new heights once again.
"I’m very grateful to be part of the Mohammedan SC family. This is one of the oldest clubs in India, and it’s starting a new chapter in the ISL. It’s a new chapter for me too—I want to help the team succeed and achieve my individual goals here." he said in an exclusive interview with RevSportz.
The 23-year-old has featured in six out of the seven matches for the Black and White Brigade in the league and looks set to become an important member of coach Andrey Chernyshov's setup.
However, more responsibility will fall on him as Mohammedan SC find themselves in a difficult position. They are currently in 12th place on the table with five points.
"We can’t say that we’re aiming straight for the top 6. Obviously, we’d love to reach the top 6 and even the finals, but we have to take it match by match and build from there," he said.

Singh’s journey into football was strongly influenced by his elder brother, Umakanta Singh, who also represented the country at the youth level.
"I began playing football after seeing my brother’s journey. If he hadn’t played, I wouldn’t have either. He got the chance to play for India’s U-16 and U-17 teams and showed me the path. Right now, playing in the ISL is a dream come true, and my brother’s guidance has been invaluable," stated Singh.
However, injuries have somewhat hindered his growth. The midfielder reflected on his recovery from a hand injury in 2019, which proved to be a major setback and forced him to miss out on national team action.
"I was only 18 when I got injured, and there were big questions about whether I’d make it to the ISL. That period was tough, but it also taught me a lot and helped me mature," he shared.
Now playing under Chernyshov, Singh is determined to overcome past setbacks and help his team secure a commendable finish in their debut ISL season.
He expressed gratitude to the head coach for fostering a supportive and encouraging environment within the squad.
"Coach Chernyshov has built a great team atmosphere—almost like a family. He’s supportive and always has solutions for any problem we face. He’s a straightforward leader who treats both Indian and foreign players equally. If something isn’t fair for Indian players, he makes sure management is aware of it," he expressed.
Mohammedan SC will return to action on November 27 when they host league leaders Bengaluru FC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.
