NorthEast United FC head coach Ricki Herbert bemoaned his side’s inability to find the back of the net while also applauding the quality of the inaugural edition of the Hero Indian Super League. Speaking after his side drew 1-1 with Mumbai City FC in what was their last home game and also the last league match of the campaign, the Kiwi gaffer was left ruing missed chances and reflecting on what could have been, had his side been more clinical in front of goal throughout the tournament.“We missed an open goal tonight, I think that in itself tells you all that we have been so utterly poor in front of goal. We have missed someone with the X Factor, someone who can go out and get us the goals that we so desperately needed,” he said at the post-match press conference. The former New Zealand international also stressed that recruitment for the next year needed to be way better and that the group of youngsters in the squad would need more time to fully develop and bed in. “Look, I admire John’s (Abraham) vision and commitment towards developing football in the North East, but we need to understand that these boys are very young,” he explained. “They need to be nurtured and groomed, but it will take time. That is why I feel recruitment in some areas is necessary if we want to be challenging for the title. Nonetheless, I feel this team out of all the franchises will be challenging for honours very soon.”Herbert also took his hat off to the passionate NorthEast United fans who turned up in vast numbers for all their home games throughout the season, “It feels great to be backed by such a wonderful bunch of fans. Even though they must have known that we were out of the reckoning for a semifinal berth, they still came out to support us here today. They have been absolutely splendid. We need to pay them back for this because more performances like the ones we have given this season might disappoint and discourage them,” Herbert said. When asked if he was in agreement with the referee’s decision to award his side a penalty, Herbert came out in support of the call, “I think it was. We deserved some luck to go our way. I thought there was sufficient contact in the box for the referee to take that call.”Rounding off the proceedings, Herbert thanked his team, support staff and the owners for their wonderful support: “The owners, my team and my support staff have been fantastic. I have seen a few young boys mature and develop as players over the course of the league and that is really heartening for me. I want the very best for this franchise and I hope that next year this side can end up playing the final.”
