FC Pune City confirmed former Chelsea and Barcelona frontman and Icelandic football’s greatest son Eidur Gudjohnsen as their marquee player for Hero Indian Super League 2016 on Wednesday. Gudjohnsen or the ‘Icelandic Volcano’, as he is affectionately known, was most recently seen in Euro 2016 after deciding to come out of international retirement to be part of his country in the biggest European extravaganza. The 37-year-old is Iceland’s all-time top scorer with 26 goals in 88 caps and will be a major boost for the Stallions’ frontline. The veteran striker made two appearances for Iceland and was very much part of the Scandinavian nation’s fairy-tale journey to the quarter-finals in France.“There were other clubs interested in me but when FC Pune City showed their interest, intent and plans, I knew this was it. I have the confidence of the coach and will ensure that they find it difficult to leave me out. Everyone needs to be motivated to succeed, and I have the same aim here. I love the sport. I still love going to training every day,” Gudjohnsen said after joining the club.A proven winner, Gudjohnsen has won the domestic league in three different countries over the course of his career. He’s a two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea in England, an Eredivisie champion with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands and La Liga as well as a UEFA Champions League winner with Spanish heavyweights Barcelona.FC Pune City head coach Antonio Habas expressed joy at Gudjohnsen’s signing. “Eidur’s has experience of playing at highest levels and a professional motivation to succeed. I've admired him from afar for many years and am very excited at the prospect of us working together for the benefit of FC Pune City,” he said.Team co-owner Hrithik Roshan also welcomed Gudjohnsen’s arrival. “Gudjohnsen has proved his mettle while playing in the top teams and leagues of the world. This is a footballer who will bring immense experience to the squad. His signing will further strengthen our squad and I extend him a warm welcome into the FCPC family,” said Hrithik.
