SC East Bengal secured a 2-1 victory over Jamshedpur FC in Match 85 of Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21 at the Fatorda Stadium in Sunday’s first game. Goals from Matti Steinmann and Anthony Pilkington ensured that the club from Kolkata picked up the three points.

At the post-match press conference, SC East Bengal assistant coach Tony Grant heaped praise on their debutants Sarthak Golui and Sourav Das, who joined the club from Mumbai City FC earlier this week. “They were very good. We asked them to play with a professional attitude and they displayed that attitude. Their job now is to play even better next week. Now all they have to do is try and improve. But that was a great start,” he said.

SC East Bengal moved to ninth on the league table but Grant is not worried about their position on the league table as they are building a team for the future. “The club is being built for the future and that is partly the reason why we have used so many players this year. We have to analyse the players that we need for the next season as well,” explained Grant.

Meanwhile, Jamshedpur FC head coach Owen Coyle was disappointed at not getting something from the game. “If you analyse the game, there is nothing in the first half as we pushed them for an equaliser. In the second half we looked comfortable. But we gave away a bad pass to give them the second goal.

“That being said, we picked ourselves up and showed great spirit and character. We kept pushing on. To be playing as well as we did, we should have got something from the game,” Coyle said.

Peter Hartley grabbed a consolation for Jamshedpur in the second half and Coyle said that Jamshedpur should have scored at least one more after Hartley’s goal. “With five minutes of regulation time and then five minutes of added time, we should have scored the equaliser. We had two or three balls that went across the goal. When you are not in front, you have to keep showing that spirit.”
