From Arunachal Pradesh to Mumbai, Gyamar Nikum chases his dreams
The 19-year-old midfielder is the first footballer from Arunachal Pradesh to feature in both the ISL and the I-League.
Midfielder Gyamar Nikum is an exciting prospect. Just 19, Nikum has made a real impression in the I-League with Inter Kashi last season and is now on the lookout to replicate his heroics in the Indian Super League (ISL) with Mumbai City FC.
Nikum joined the Islanders from Rajasthan United in 2023 before he was sent on loan to Inter Kashi to gain valuable experience. After just one season in the I-League, Nikum was added to Mumbai City FC’s squad for the 2024-25 campaign and was part of their Thailand pre-season squad.
The 19-year-old has made just one appearance for Mumbai City FC and none so far this season, but the Arunachal Pradesh midfielder is ready to wait for his chance.
“I am still young and trying to learn and grow. I would love to contribute to Mumbai City, but at the same time, I know I will have to be patient as it’s one of the best clubs in ISL.” he told Khel Now in an exclusive interview.
“I am giving my 100% in training. If and whenever I get an opportunity, I will try to prove myself. I have high hopes because the club promised me development when I joined from Rajasthan United,” he added.

Hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, Nikum is keen to become the footballing face of the region and help motivate more youngsters to pursue their passion of football and make it to the big stage of Indian football. He is the first player from the state to have played in both the I-League and ISL.
“My hometown, Arunachal, is the closest thing to my heart. I always try to encourage my friends and my juniors to take up football as a profession,” he said.
“The passion and love for football in Arunachal Pradesh are immense. We saw during the Santosh Trophy how many fans came out to watch the matches, even when Arunachal wasn’t playing,” he added.
Making the step up from I-League and ISL is a challenge for any player but Nikum is up to prove that he belongs to the top-tier of Indian football.
“I think ISL is a little tactically superior to I-League. The conditions surrounding the I-League are a bit different, considering the 2:30 pm kick-offs. Quality-wise, of course, there is a difference, but I think the stark difference is in terms of professionalism and facilities,” he said.
“I am focused on the season. Playing for the national team is a dream, and I am confident it will happen sooner or later,” he added.
Speaking about his ambitions for the season, the midfielder exuded a winning mentality.
“As a team, we always want to be Shield and Cup champions. We have got a star-studded team, so all we want is success. Personally, I would love to contribute my part in it,” he concluded.
