Goan-born Francis Fernandes has played a starring role during Delhi Dynamos’ recent turnaround form, helping the team achieve consecutive wins against NorthEast United and Mumbai City to propel them from last in the table up to fifth. The 29-year-old has usually played as a winger during his career, but Dynamos head coach Harm van Veldhoven has used him as a striker in the last two games, to great effect.Fernandes himself is a man of few words, but he was in jubilant mood during a post-match interview with indiansuperleague.com. The win had no doubt put him in good spirits. “We are very happy, the team played very well and we’re enjoying it,” Fernandes exulted. “We’re playing as a team, so, good for us.”The winger-cum-striker acknowledged his coach’s hand in his current good form, with consecutive home losses – 4-1 to Goa and 1-0 to Kerala – forcing Van Veldhoven to rejig his lineup, including putting Fernandes as a striker. “The coach changed the tactics and played me as a striker, and I’m doing well over there,” said Fernandes. “The coach believed in me. And, I’ve done well in the national team (in that position).”A consummate team man, Fernandes was quick with an answer when asked if he was comfortable playing as a striker. “I’m comfortable in any position,” he quipped. He went onto elaborate on what his coach is expecting from him in his new role. “He wants me to make those runs behind the defenders, and provide crosses and goals,” Fernandes explained.Fernandes has yet to open his goalscoring account, but Fernandes revealed that he expects that to change given his new position as a striker. “I’m trying to score goals in this ISL.”Thoughts turned to the remainder of the ISL campaign, with Delhi two points off a top-four place with three games remaining. Fernandes is confident that his team can qualify for the semifinals. “We are in business again! It’s in our hands now, and we have to win the next match.”“We know the importance of being in the top four,” Fernandes went on to add. “We want to be there. But, we know we have to work hard.”Delhi’s next assignment is a home game against second-placed Atlético de Kolkata on December 2 and Fernandes is certain the team will be well-prepared. “The coach will guide us how to play them and we will follow the instructions,” he stated simply. Incidentally, the clash will be the Dynamos’ final home game, and Fernandes and his teammates will no doubt want to go out on a high! “It’s our last home match, and we will do our best!”
