Spanish striker Edu Garcia expressed his delight at winning the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) trophy last season in an interview with goal.com. Having returned to the Hero ISL in January 2019 after just half a season away, the striker revealed that one of the main reasons for joining ATK FC was his desire to win the coveted trophy.

“Last season was a very special season for me. When I joined ATK I had the goal to win the ISL trophy and when you reach your goals, you can only be happy. I knew that Antonio (Lopez Habas had already) won the ISL once and he wanted to do it again. He is an experienced coach who knows what he wants. So, it’s easier when your coach is clear and everybody in the team thinks the same,” the striker shared.

Garcia made his Hero ISL debut in the 2017-18 season with Bengaluru FC, making 14 appearances while scoring two goals as well as providing five assists for the Blues. He moved to China to play for Zhejiang Lǜchéng after impressing in the Hero ISL but had a ‘difficult’ experience.

“China is a very big country and they are growing up in football. But the experience was more difficult than my Indian experience. Much like China, India is also growing every year and Indian players are improving very fast,” Garcia opined.

The versatile forward labeled himself as a ‘polyvalent’ player and believes that he can play in any position on the field. Last season under head coach Habas, Garcia played in different positions across the attack and excelled wherever he was deployed.

“I am a polyvalent player,” Garcia said when asked about his favourite position. “I can play in every position in midfield and in the attack. I don’t care about the position. I can play today in the left, tomorrow as a midfielder and next day as a second striker.”
