Suhail Bhat scored the decisive goal as Mohun Bagan Super Giant triumphed 1-0 over Downtown Heroes FC in the opening match of the Durand Cup 2024 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday.

The defending champions started their title defence with a hard-fought victory, thanks to a late goal in the second half. Mohun Bagan SG, under the guidance of assistant coach Bastab Roy, fielded a youthful squad, including new signing Tom Eldred, who was named captain for the match. Key players such as Asish Rai and Glan Martins were also included in the starting lineup.

The first half saw Downtown Heroes FC create more scoring opportunities, but Mohun Bagan SG’s defence held firm, keeping the scoreline level at 0-0. The closest chance for the home team came when Taison Singh’s long-range effort struck the crossbar.

In the second half, Mohun Bagan SG increased their attacking pressure, and their efforts were rewarded in the 73rd minute. Singh delivered a precise cross to full-back Asish Rai, who then set up Bhat to score the only goal of the match.

Despite a concerted effort from Downtown Heroes FC to find an equaliser, they struggled to breach Mohun Bagan SG’s defence. The home team successfully managed to preserve their lead and secure all three points.

Mohun Bagan SG will face the Indian Air Force Football Team in their next group-stage fixture, while Downtown Heroes FC will also take on the same opponent. Both matches are scheduled to take place in August.
