Juan Pedro Benali’s men took the upper hand from the offset as they broke the deadlock in the 13th minute of the game courtesy of Thoi Singh’s sublime finish. Jithin MS placed a beautiful through ball inside the penalty box from the left corner, which was well-directed by Singh to register a 1-0 lead.
After going down a goal, Shillong Lajong FC created a few offensive moves and were very close to equalising through Wadajied, but his left-footed long-ranged effort was denied by NorthEast United FC goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh.
Ajaraie doubled the lead for the Highlanders in the 33rd minute, utilising his presence of mind inside the opponent box and scoring on the rebound after his initial shot came off the post. NorthEast United FC finished the opening half with a sustainable 2-0 lead.
Benali’s men continued to create chances in the second half, showcasing their intent of increasing the goal difference but the finish touch evaded them.
Shillong Lajong FC defender Ronney was also sent off in the dying minutes of the second half for conceding two yellow cards.
However, NorthEast United FC sealed the win with super-sub Parthib Gogoi’s 93rd-minute strike. Significantly, with this win, the Highlanders record their first major final appearance, which is to take place on August 31 in Kolkata.
