NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Pedro Benali believed a draw would have been a fair result for both sides after the Highlanders went down to the Mariners at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

In a rematch of the Durand Cup final, the match lived up to its expectations from the very first minute. The visitors started strong, taking an early lead with a goal from Mohammed Ali Bemammer in the 4th minute. However, the hosts quickly responded, with young Dippendu Biswas equalising just six minutes later.

NorthEast United FC showcased their quick counterattacking style, regaining the lead through Alaeddine Ajaraie.

Captain Subhasish Bose levelled the score for the Mariners in the second half before substitute Jason Cummings found the winner late in the game, securing a thrilling victory for the home side in a captivating five-goal showdown.

“Sometimes football is unfair. For example, you know, as I say all the time, you can play against 11 players, but not against the elements. And sometimes it's small details (that) change the game,” Benali stated in the post-match press conference.

NorthEast United FC showcased their dynamic attacking style, posing a constant threat with their swift counterattacks.

The Highlanders pushed hard for an equaliser in the dying minutes, but Mohun Bagan SG stood firm to secure their first win of the ISL season.

“But I'm really happy, and proud of my players because we showed that we're growing,” said Benali.

Winger Jithin MS started on the right wing tonight, while Moroccan forward Ajaraie operated on the left.

The duo worked well together to score NorthEast United FC’s second goal, and Jithin frequently posed a challenge for Bose. However, Benali highlighted that it was not only Jithin but the whole team that showcased a spirited performance throughout the match.

“You know, not only Jithin MS, but all the players played hard today.”

“We showed that we have a good team, we have good players. Everybody did their job (today). But sometimes it's not enough to do your job (get the desired result),” he said.

The hosts enjoyed more possession of the ball, but both sides had almost an equal number of scoring opportunities. The Mariners registered seven shots on target, while the Highlanders weren’t far behind with six.

“I think if the game had finished as a draw, (it) would have been a great result for both teams. That would’ve been a fair result. But sometimes I repeat, football is unfair,” Benali commented.
