Two-time Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) champions, ATK further strengthened an already powerful attack by concluding a two-year deal for departing Wellington Phoenix forward, David Williams. The move, which was announced by the club on Friday, sees the Australian reunite with his Nix strike-partner Roy Krishna, who signed for the Kolkata-based club about ten days ago.

The 31-year-old was magnificent for the A-league club last year, scoring 11 goals in 27 matches and forming a lethal partnership with Krishna, who in turn took home the Golden Boot and the Best Player of the Year award. Williams averaged close to 1.5 key passes a match last year while having a respectable 170.9 minutes per goal ratio. He was shooting with an accuracy of 53.7 per cent and completed 12 dribbles.

The 5 feet 9 forward spent time training with European clubs like Club Brugge and Liverpool before signing his first professional deal with native club Queensland Roar more than a decade ago. That association ended sooner than expected as the forward moved back to Europe to sign for Danish club Brøndby IF. After a brilliant start, which helped him become a regular in the first-team, Williams injured his knee and that proved to be the downfall of his Brøndby career.

Moving back to Australia, Williams had short stints with North Queensland Fury and Sydney FC for a couple of years, following which he committed to Melbourne City FC. There the forward found some of his old flamboyance and verve back, scoring 20-plus goals over five seasons. The Australian enjoyed a brief two-year stay back in Europe with Hungarian outfit, Haladás, where his 20 goals in two seasons prompted Wellington to call him back to the A-League.

On the international front, Williams has represented the Socceroos on two occasions while he was still playing for Brøndby. The forward was also part of all the junior teams of the country before making it through to the first team.

ATK, on their part, would already be licking their lips at the sight of Krishna, Williams, fellow new-arrival Jobby Justin, Edu Garcia and Michael Soosairaj firmly stationed at the forefront of their team. Former coach Antonio Lopez Habas has now got a real squad, more than capable of mounting a real challenge in the Hero ISL 2019-20.
