David James (L) and Iain Hume. After undoubtedly the best game Kochi has hosted so far, Kerala Blasters FC’s head coach – and player – David James was extremely happy to have maintained the unbeaten home run in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). Speaking to the media after their 2-1 victory against Atletico de Kolkata, James brushed aside the question regarding Kolkata’s appeal for a goal in the dying minutes. He explained that technically the whole ball has to cross the line for the goal to be allowed. Even though having goal line technology would have made it easier for the referees, James was not sure it would have changed anything in this particular match. The gambit of playing Pedro Gusmão on the wings paid off for the hosts as he assisted the first goal and scored the second. Appreciating the Brazilian’s contribution, James told the media it was all part of the game plan. “I played him there because I felt he could do something for us. He played exceptionally in the first 20-25 minutes and he also created the goal. He did what he was asked to do, so did the entire team. There was room for improvement in some elements. Obviously, conceding wasn’t nice. But we had a good game in the end.”The gaffer also backed his decision to bring in Penn Orji in place of Raphael Romey before the half-time break. It was a tactical decision to try and score another goal in order to ensure Kolkata didn’t come back into the game. James was also happy that the injured players including Michael Chopra are back in action. When asked about his choice for the Man of the Match, he picked the home fans who created a deafening atmosphere throughout the match. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium recorded an impressive attendance of 57,296. Both James and Iain Hume, who accompanied the former, said it was impossible to hear even the player who was standing only five feet away. When asked about his tremendous work rate, Hume said that it was his job to try hard and step up to the occasion. “I am here to score goals and the best part is when you get to do it in front of your home fans.” He also expressed happiness with the overall performance and work ethic of the entire team. “A wholehearted effort is what everybody in the team demands from each other. The least you can do is put in a 100 per cent. Even if you have a poor game technically or tactically, people might forgive you. But they will never forgive if you haven’t put in your 100 per cent.”Having edged closer to the second spot in the ISL standings, James and Hume signed off with a “thank you” in Malayalam. Kerala Blasters next play FC Goa in the latter’s backyard on November 26.
