Mumbai City FC’s Subhasish Bose has been named the captain of the Indian national team for the upcoming SAFF Suzuki Cup opener against Sri Lanka, which will take place at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka on September 5.

The Indian defender enjoyed a fruitful 2017-18 campaign with Hero Indian Super League (ISL) side Bengaluru FC. He was a mainstay in the starting eleven, pulling off a string of impressive performances throughout the season. The 23-year-old continued his fine form for the national team, helping his side to victory in the Hero Intercontinental Cup in June.

Head coach Stephen Constantine heaped praises on his captain-elect, citing some of his standout qualities, “Subhasish has been very impressive in the recent camps. In the first few days, he had to work a lot and being a fighter, he has made a strong comeback. I'm very proud of him and obviously, it's going to be a very special moment for him."

Bose, who made his debut for the national side in June, was elated to hear the news of being awarded the captain’s armband. “It's a dream-come-true situation for me to lead the national team. I'd like to thank our coach for his trust in me and I'd give my best to make the best of the opportunity.”

India come into this tournament as defending champions. However, Constantine has named a relatively young squad this time around. After their first encounter against Sri Lanka, India will face-off against the Maldives on September 9.

Ahead of the tournament, Constantine spoke of the mood in the camp and the excitement shown by his players, “The whole squad is eagerly waiting to get the ball rolling and I would like to say that every single member of the team is enthralled for it. Everyone will be up for the game against us and it'll be a great experience for all of us."
