Jamshedpur FC put in a measured performance to beat Chennaiyin FC 3-1 at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Sunday. Having lost their last match against FC Pune City, it was a welcome victory for Jamshedpur. The three points helped the Miners climb up to the third position in the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) table with 14 points from nine matches.

It was Chennaiyin’s sixth loss of the season and the defending champions now find themselves in the ninth position with just four points from eight matches.

  • Pablo Morgado scored a stunner to put Jamshedpur in the lead with 14 minutes on the clock.
  • Carlos Calvo converted a penalty on the 29th minute to give the hosts a two-goal cushion.
  • Raphael Augusto scored from the penalty spot to pull a goal back for Chennaiyin on the 68th
  • Mario Arques restored Jamshedpur’s two-goal lead just four minutes later.

The match started with both teams trying to carve open each other's defence with some intricate passing in the midfield, but most of the attacks broke down in the final third. The home team slowly began stamping their authority on the match and the first real chance presented itself on the 11th minute. Bikash Jairu sent in a low cross from the left forcing Eli Sabia into a rushed clearance. The ball could have gone anywhere, but the Chennaiyin defender got lucky.

However, three minutes later, no amount of luck could save Chennaiyin from going a goal down. Pablo Morgado hit one sweetly with his right foot from outside the box and there was nothing Chennaiyin goalkeeper Karanjit Singh could do about it. 1-0 to the home team.

The goal set the tempo for the Jamshedpur players and the home team took total control of the match. The Miners kept piling on the pressure and pegged Chennaiyin back in their own half.

The pressure finally paid off on the 28th minute. Karanjit did well to save a stinging shot from Michael Soosairaj, but his block fell just in front of an advancing Sumeet Passi inside the six-yard box. In his attempt to clear the danger, Jerry Lalrinzuala ended up fouling Passi and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot.

Calvo stepped up and dispatched the penalty kick to the top corner. 2-0 to Jamshedpur.

The home team sat back a little after their second goal, allowing Chennaiyin a little more of the ball. The visitors, however, had little to show for it. Jamshedpur custodian Subrata Paul was called upon a couple of times to keep out Anirudh Thapa and Augusto, but they were regulation saves at best.

The home team took a 2-goal lead into the break.

Five minutes into the second-half, Passi broke Chennaiyin's offside trap and managed to test Karanjit. The Chennaiyin goalkeeper was up to the task and made sure further damage was averted. The shot was Passi’s last involvement in the match as the youngster was replaced by Farukh Choudhary soon after.

On the hour mark, Jamshedpur head coach Cesar Ferrando brought on Tim Cahill in place of goal scorer Morgado which enabled the hosts to play in longer balls into the opposition half.

Chennaiyin received a lifeline on the 68th minute in controversial fashion after Gregory Nelson won a penalty. The Dutch midfielder went down inside the Jamshedpur box after a challenge from Jairu. The referee initially decided against giving a penalty, but pointed to the spot after intervention from the linesman. Augusto sent Subrata the wrong way and slotted in calmly. 2-1 and Chennaiyin had hope.

The visitors’ joy, however, lasted for only four minutes. Soosairaj did extremely well to find Cahill inside the Chennaiyin box and the Australian’s goal-bound shot was blocked by Sabia in exchange for a corner kick.

Calvo curled the subsequent set-piece straight to Arques’ head and the Spaniard’s weak header eluded everyone and crept into the goal. It was a soft goal to concede and Karanjit could have done better in the Chennaiyin goal.

With the two-goal cushion restored, Jamshedpur shut up shop and Chennaiyin offered very little going forward for remaining 15 minutes. The match ended 3-1 in favour of the hosts.
