Goals from Manvir Singh and Roy Krishna secured a 4-1 victory for ATK Mohun Bagan over Odisha FC in Match 84 of Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21 at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim on Saturday. The Mariners scored thrice in the second half after Cole Alexander cancelled out Manvir’s opener in the first half.

  • Manvir Singh gave ATK Mohun Bagan the lead in the 11th minute.
  • In first-half stoppage time, Cole Alexander equalized for Odisha.
  • A second goal from Manvir in the 54th minute gave ATK Mohun Bagan the lead for a second time.
  • Roy Krishna then scored twice in three minutes to put the match beyond Odisha.

The goal for ATK Mohun Bagan came in the 11th minute after a brilliant strike from Manvir. The India international received the ball on the right flank from Roy Krishna and curled it from the edge of the box to find the back of the net for his team.

ATK Mohun Bagan kept the pressure on their opponents for most of the first half in search of a second goal. Mariners debutant Lenny Rodrigues came close to doubling the lead in the 23rd minute but the experienced midfielder’s attempt was inches over the crossbar.

Forty minutes into the game, Roy Krishna teed up Marcelo Pereira for a shot but Odisha custodian Arshdeep Singh made an important save to deny the attacker. The save proved crucial as Odisha clawed their way into the game with a goal in first-half stoppage time.

Paul Ramfangzauva found space outside the box and attempted a shot but his effort hit the post. Cole collected the ball after that and curled it into the right corner to beat Arindam Bhattacharja in goal.

ATK Mohun Bagan took the lead for a second time in the 54th minute, with Manvir scoring for the Mariners once again. Krishna assisted the goal after finding Manvir on the right flank and the Indian forward broke into the Odisha box before slotting the ball narrowly past the goalkeeper and into the net.

The Mariners then scored another in the 83rd minute after Krishna scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-1. It was Odisha’s skipper and goal-scorer Alexander who was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Krishna got his fourth goal contribution of the match three minutes later after scoring his second of the game for the Mariners. Manvir flicked the ball towards his strike partner who controlled it well before beating Shubham Sarangi and firing the ball into the net at the far post. Following the victory, the Mariners bridged the gap between themselves and current leaders Mumbai City FC heading into the business end of the league stage.

Hero of the Match: Manvir Singh

Playing on the right flank for the Mariners, Manvir was a constant threat for the Odisha defenders. The forward scored the opening goal with a beautifully placed finish, before powering a shot into the net in the second half to make it 2-1 in the Mariners’ favour. He indeed had a scintillating game and showed why national coach Igor Stimac rates him so highly.
