NorthEast United FC registered their first away victory in Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2019-20 after a 1-0 win over Hyderabad FC at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Wednesday. Hyderabad FC created several chances but failed to capitalise as Maximiliano Barreiro scored the winner from the spot for the Highlanders in the 86th minute.

  • Hyderabad FC had most of the chances in the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net.
  • Substitute Maximiliano Barreiro netted a penalty in the 86th minute to secure three points.

Both sides began the game with intent and purpose without creating too much early on. The hosts had the first chance of the match in the fifth minute when Marcelo Pereira wriggled his way into the opposition box with tricky footwork before forcing the goalkeeper into conceding a corner.

Hyderabad had to wait until the 25th minute for their next opportunity which went to Marko Stankovic after he was teed up by Abhishek Halder. The Austrian, though, couldn’t keep his effort on target much to the dismay of the home faithful.

Mohammed Yasir had the home side’s next attempt on goal four minutes later, but the opposition goalkeeper was well-position to make the save as Hyderabad enjoyed their best spell of the half. Gani Ahmed Nigam had a good chance shortly after when he reached a 50-50 ball before NorthEast’s goalkeeper. However, the Indian midfielder couldn’t keep his effort on target as the score remained deadlocked.

The visitors’ first attempt on goal came in the 36th minute after a cross broke nicely for Martin Chaves to attack in the box. The Uruguayan’s effort, however, failed to test the goalkeeper. The final opportunity of the opening period also went to NorthEast. This time it fell to their talisman Asamoah Gyan, who volleyed a shot from distance over the crossbar before half-time as it stayed 0-0 going into the break.

The first chance of the second half went to NorthEast as Redeem Tlang forced the goalkeeper into a save from a tight angle in the 46th minute. Substitute Panagiotis Triadis, who replaced an injured Gyan early in the half, was then denied by Hyderabad’s goalkeeper again six minutes later as the visitors looked to build momentum in the second period.

Halder had the home side’s first attempt on goal in the second half in the 57th minute, but the youngster’s left-footed shot was off target. NorthEast’s custodian was called into action nine minutes later when Rohit Kumar tried his luck from range.

The Highlanders withstood Hyderabad’s pressure for the remainder of the half and struck the killer blow four minutes from full-time. After being awarded a penalty for a handball by Shankar Sampingraj, Barreiro stepped up to the spot and scored the winner that secured NorthEast’s first away win of the season.
