NorthEast United FC ended their seven-match winless run with a 2-1 victory over Jamshedpur FC in Match 61 of Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21 at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Sunday. Goals from Ashutosh Mehta and new-signing Deshorn Brown sealed the victory for the Highlanders, while Peter Hartley pulled one back for Jamshedpur.

At the post-match press conference, NorthEast assistant coach Alison Kharsyntiew commended his team’s overall performance against Jamshedpur. “We played very well. In the attack, we kept the ball very well and we were clinical in the final third. We also defended very well,” he said.

The Highlanders were playing their first game after the departure of head coach Gerard Nus and the assistant coach hoped that his team will build on this win in the upcoming matches. “[Interim head coach] Khalid told the players to give their best effort and work hard, more than the opponent team. This will encourage the whole team and hopefully they will remain consistent in the upcoming matches,” Alison said.

Arriving from Bengaluru FC as an injury replacement for Kwesi Appiah, Brown doubled his side’s lead after coming off the bench in the second half. “This will give him a lot of confidence and hopefully he will score more in the coming matches,” Alison said about the Jamaican striker.

Meanwhile, Jamshedpur head coach Owen Coyle expressed his disappointment after their third successive defeat. “Obviously we are not playing as well as we have to. We are making terrible individual errors and that is costing us goals. The first goal was easily avoidable,” Coyle said.

Jamshedpur have now conceded eight goals in their last three matches and Coyle was a worried man. “We need to get back to what we were doing before. The injury to Dinliana [Laldinliana Renthlei] is a certain blow to us because he gives us a lot of balance. We have to get those clean sheets and pick ourselves up and go again,” he said.
