Bengaluru FC secured a comprehensive 3-1 victory over hosts Mumbai City FC at the Mumbai Football Arena on Thursday to rise to the top of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 table. Sunil Chhetri returned to terrorize his previous Hero ISL club, as his brace and Miku’s goal was enough to gift the Blues maximum points. The ‘Hero of the Match’ and Bengaluru’s skipper, Chhetri spoke to indiansuperleague.com and shared his views on the encounter shortly after the final whistle. Here are the excerpts.
How does it feel to get your scoring boots back on?
More importantly, it is good to be back and get the three points, especially after the last game against Delhi, where we were flat and we didn’t turn up. It was very important for us to bounce back and the message was clear from the gaffer to go and show some character if you want to be at the top of the table. If you want to be in the last four, you can’t just play well one week and play the way (we did) against Delhi. So, it was very very important for us to bounce back and thank God we did, because playing Mumbai is never easy.
Your thoughts on the game?
They’re a good side and have some really good players. It was very very important for us to do well and grab our chances and that’s what we did. Trust me, it’s not easy to come and play against Mumbai with the kind of team they have and the kind of support they have. So, I am just happy to get the three points.
Do you still have a soft corner for Mumbai City FC?
Very much. I had a great time here. Right from the owners, the coaching staff, the ball boys to everyone made sure I had a great time here. I want to thank them for the two years and all the best for the upcoming games.
What does the rest of the season look like for Bengaluru FC?
Now, it is going to get tricky as we travel to Bhutan for the AFC Cup game and it is going to be difficult as we have AFC plus ISL. It is very important that we rest well and nobody gets injured.
Does Bengaluru FC have the squad to do it?
Of course, and the will to do it.
