Penn Orji played the unfamiliar role of an ‘impact substitute’ for Kerala Blasters FC today, and to devastating effect as well! After starting Kerala’s first three games, and serving as team captain, the Nigerian midfielder began today’s game against FC Pune City on the bench. His introduction in the 62nd minute proved to be an inspired decision from assistant coach Trevor Morgan. Just three minutes later, Orji broke a 1-1 deadlock with a superb low finish from Iain Hume’s cutback. The goal proved to be the winner, as Orji and his teammates saw out the rest of the game to secure a long-awaited first Hero Indian Super League (ISL) victory. A delighted Orji spoke to www.indiansuperleague.com after the match, and was in a celebratory mood, although he was quick to credit the whole team for the win.You started the game as a substitute today and you scored, how do you feel?I feel really happy! It was a goal that got us three points. I would have been equally happy if someone else had scored, because we came here for three points and we got it. It’s our first win in the ISL so I’m delighted. Were you a little disgruntled when you found out you were on the bench?Well, these things happen. When the coach put out the line-up I wasn’t angry because I knew it was for a good reason. When he told me to warm up, I thought that this was my time and I took the opportunity.Do you think you can contribute more to the game when you play a shorter role?Whatever little contribution I can do for the team, I am satisfied. Even if it’s for two minutes, or even if it’s for the full 90 minutes, it’s fine. What’s next for Kerala Blasters FC?Well, from here the winning begins and we pray that we get the strength to continue winning.
