Mumbai City FC will be looking for their second victory on a trot when they take on FC Goa in an away match on Wednesday. The Islanders secured their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over rivals FC Pune City in their last match and will be confident going into the fixture.
Ahead of the encounter, indiansuperleague.com caught up with Mumbai’s Portuguese midfielder Modou Sougou, who played a starring role in the Islanders' last victory, scoring once and earning a penalty which led to the second. The 33-year-old shared his thoughts on his Indian colleagues, the upcoming game, and more. Here are the excerpts:
Talk us through your football journey.
I have played football since I was a little kid and my first professional team was Leiria in Portugal. After that, I was there in Setubal, Academica. Following that, I moved to Romania. I played for CFR Cluj there for one season and I won the title there. After that, I moved to France where I played FOR Marseille and Evian. Then I moved to England and played in Sheffield Wednesday. Now I am here.
How important was the last victory against FC Pune City?
The match against FC Pune City was very important for us because we didn’t have a good start and we lost the first game, while the second game was a draw. So, it was very important to win and that’s what we did. It was a derby too and psychology was involved. It was really good for us to win as it was a beginning for us to start the championship race. How we started was not good and we are working hard to try and win.
On playing under Jorge Costa.
I played for Jorge Costa in Academica and CFR Cluj. It was one of the reasons I came here. When I heard about the opportunity to work with him again, it was an easy decision.
Thoughts on the Indian players in the squad.
In the team, we have good young players. They have quality. I can say that about Pranjal, Raynier and Subhasish. I am very happy to play with these players because they’re young and they want to learn. They want to improve themselves, show their quality and I think they have a future ahead of them.
On facing FC Goa at their home.
FC Goa have a good team and they have good players. They have a good striker, one of the best in the league. For us, it is important to be focused on ourselves. We know what we can do. We have one plan and hope we can do what we do. If we do that, we can get some points from the match. For me, it is important to be focused. We need to do our job and we believe in ourselves. It will be a difficult game for both teams, but I believe we can do something in the match.
