Mumbai City FC’s new signing, Igor Angulo, will be a key figure in their Hero ISL 2021-22 season. Having won the Golden Boot with FC Goa last year, the Spaniard will be keen to replicate the same success with the Islanders.

Coincidentally, he will face his former employers on his MCFC debut as the Islanders take on FC Goa.

The Spaniard exclusively spoke to ISL Media team about his debut season with FC Goa, his targets for the upcoming Hero ISL 2021-22 season, and a lot more.

Following are the excerpts from the interview:

How was your debut season experience with FC Goa?

Last season was incredibly good, better than I thought it would be. At the end for my club, for FC Goa with my appearance in the semi-finals, we lost on penalties against Mumbai City, and I also got the Golden Boot and some other trophies during the season. So, overall, I was very happy with my performance. This means my job was very good and journalists, players, and everyone recognised it. I was immensely happy to come here last year, I enjoyed the country and the league which was quite successful for me.

What made you choose Mumbai City FC?

After a good season for me, I moved to Mumbai City FC. This club was the only place I wanted to be at as it was the best club last year, they won everything. I’m extremely proud to join them and I hope this season will be even better than the last one. This season, I’m here to help them [Mumbai City FC] achieve everything like they did last year, and I believe we have a good team and enough squad depth to do so.

What are your targets with Mumbai City FC?

My personal target is always to help the team as much as I can. Obviously, I’m a striker so I should score goals, but I can’t say any concrete number of goals. My main target is to help the team with my experience, my skills, with everything. Most important are the common targets for me to join Mumbai City FC: to win the ISL and the trophy.

Your first game is against your former team FC Goa. How excited are you to play against them?

Of course, it’s going to be a special game for me as I played for them last year. I still have friends there, in the squad, in the coaching staff, so it’s going to be special for me. I’m curious to meet them because we couldn’t meet so far because of the bio-bubbles but I will just meet them before the game and after the game but during the game I will forget everything and fight for those three points. For us, it’s important to start the season with three points, we have to be ready to fight against them. They [FC Goa] have a good team, they kept the basic squad from last year, the coaching staff is also the same, so they are going to be a difficult rival for us.

Only four number of foreign players can be in the playing XI this season. Do you think it will help foreign players?

I don't know what to say to this question because I think it's going to be very good for Indian players to be there on the pitch. With the addition of one more Indian player this year, the playing time is going to be more for them and like this they can improve more to represent their national team also. But when I came here last year, they looked up to us and wanted to learn from us. We are like a teacher to them, and they love to have foreign players in the team to learn. But this year, there will be one less foreign player on the pitch so I think it will be difficult for them to learn but they are playing on the pitch themselves. So, I don’t know what to say whether it will be better for them or worse, we’ll see at the end of the season.
