Goncalves hopes ‘hard phase’ to pass soon for FC Goa

Trindade Goncalves has played every minute in FC Goa’ opening three games of the 2016 Hero Indian Super League. The Brazilian midfielder will once again be in contention for a starting berth as the Gaurs’ search for their first point of the season continues when they come up against Atlético de Kolkata at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday. Goncalves has completed two blocks, three clearances, four successful tackles and five interceptions from midfield this year. The 20-year-old spoke to indiansuperleague.com ahead of his side’s fourth game of the season. Here are the excerpts from the interview

Tough luck in the league so far. How is the mood in the camp?

Of course, it is a not the best phase that we are passing through but the team is united, and together we are going through the situation and we are going to change it.

ATK at home is a difficult proposition. How are you going to deal with them?

We are not going to lose our focus, going to control the ball and possession and going to have a strong defence so that we can score a goal up front.

Goa right now have the most shots on goal and you yourself have five shots. So do you think the goals are just around the corner?

I believe in it and like I said before it is a hard phase and time that we are passing through now but as soon as the balls start coming in, our luck will change and we will start scoring again.

How has the experience been in India so far?

Because of the results we have had till now I am not enjoying completely. However, out of the ground the people have been very kind and the reception we have received has been beautiful.

Does it help that Goa have a similar culture to Brazil, like both were Portuguese colonies back in the day?

It makes it a lot easier because of the proximity with culture. We have a player in our team Sahil [Tavora] who is like a bridge between us and the Indian players because he knows Portuguese. So it has been good.
