Bengaluru FC travel to Delhi in Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 to take on Delhi Dynamos FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday. The Blues’ Spanish recruit Edu Garcia has proved to be a significant addition to the side, weighing in with a goal and four assists so far. The Spaniard spoke to indiansuperleague.com ahead of the fixture and shared the secret behind Bengaluru’s blistering start this season. Here are the excerpts.
This is your first season in the ISL, how has your experience been so far?
I’m very excited as you said, it’s my first time here, very far from home. I think it is a very important challenge for me. I think the ISL is growing. It’s important to be here. I think it’s a very good experience in my profession and life.
New country, new teammates and new coach – how tough was it to settle for you with Bengaluru FC?
Playing far from home is difficult because you need to acclimatize to a new country, to the city, your new mates. But I think in my case it’s easier because the coach is Spanish like me and I have a lot of mates from my country for example, Miku. The other players from India are very good people. We have a very good, strong group. It’s easier than going to another country.
What are the boys doing when you guys are not playing football?
Yeah. When I’m in Bengaluru I usually go to the malls with my wife or maybe we go to the restaurants to eat dinner. For sure, we go for tourism in the city. As a team, we live all together in the same building. Sometimes we go to have lunch, dinner. We’re a very good group.
You are top of the table in the league – how much does it mean to the team, to the fans to be at the top in the very first season?
Now, we’re top of the table. It’s very important for us because that means we are working well. I think we can’t make the mistake of thinking the work is done because we’re just halfway through the season. There are nine games more. We must continue training. It’s a good moment for us but we cannot relax.
How important is the match against Delhi considering that there are three teams fighting for top spot?
Tomorrow’s match is very important because it is true that Delhi is not in a good moment. They are the last team in the league. But I think they have the same level as all the teams in the league. So, if we do what we have to do I think we can win the match, but we need to stay strong, to be focussed. I think it’s not an easy match.
Any message for the fans?
Yeah for the fans all of my words are to say thank you. They are awesome when we play at home. West Block Blues and the other groups are incredible. They are singing in all the matches supporting us. They even come to see us away. We need them. I say thank you and I ask them to continue supporting us please.
