ATK travel to the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati to take on NorthEast United FC in Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 on Friday. NorthEast snapped their four-game losing streak under new technical advisor, Avram Grant in their previous game and will be high on confidence. The Kolkata outfit will also be hoping for a turnaround in the second half of the season and goalkeeper Debjit Majumder is targeting more clean sheets in the remaining fixtures. He spoke to indiansuperleague.com before the game and shared his thoughts on the upcoming fixture. Here are the excerpts.
How would you rate ISL as a platform?
ISL is a very good platform, especially for Indian players. The players play under very good coaches and get to improve a lot. Indian players have improved a lot in my opinion.
You have won the ISL – how would you describe the feeling and would you like to share any particular moment?
Obviously, it’s a great achievement to win a league like ISL. I can’t express the feeling after winning with ATK last season, it’s one of a kind. We got the fruits of our hard work. It is a very good feeling.
Teddy Sheringham is a very reputed coach, how is it like playing under him?
I’ve watched him on TV. Never thought that I would be playing under him someday. It’s a very big experience. I was shocked that such a big player is our coach. The best part about him is he motivates us a lot. He pushes everyone to the extent that they perform at their best. Even if we make a mistake, he’ll tell us where we went wrong and motivate us to do well in the next game. To play under a coach like that is a big advantage.
What do you have to say about your personal performance?
It’s been okay. But I can do much better. I work hard every single day but it doesn’t go well all the time. It’s my job to prevent goals and I have three clean sheets so far. I’m trying to get more clean sheets. Because if you keep a clean sheet, you’re certain to get a point and if we score then we get the three points. That is my job and I try to do that every match.
Are you happy about the situation ATK is in halfway through the season?
No, obviously. But there are still nine matches to go and there will be a lot of changes. Tomorrow’s match is very important. We have to win that one. If we win tomorrow, we will be in a good position because the teams are separated by very few points. Anything can happen. We just concentrate on the next game.
How’s your preparation for the next match been like?
Obviously, we are working very hard. We’ll try to replicate what the coach has said. Three points is the target. We play for that only. If we get the three points, that’ll take us to a very good position. The more we win, the more the confidence. So I think tomorrow’s match is very important.
Who’s your best friend in the team?
All of them are good friends. But, Prabir (Das) is my best friend. He was here last year and we’ve played together in many teams. For the last three years we’re in the same team.
Who’s your ideal player and why?
Among Indian players, my idol is Sandip Nandy. When I was small, I used to watch him playing for Mahindra. That’s when I decided to be a goalkeeper. I’ve played with him in East Bengal and I shared a lot with him. He was so helpful. He taught me like an elder brother. Even now, we have a very good relationship. He should be a role model to everyone as even at this age, he’s playing and kept himself fit. I like that a lot about him.
